JR Shikoku offers a lot of discounts for people getting return tickets on express trains, and offers a further discount for a lot of routes when you purchase 4 or 10 tickets.
For example, one way Matsuyama-Niihama on an Express service is 2900 yen, but a return ticket is 5000, and 4 tickets are 9000 yen or so.
There are express trains from Matsuyama down to Uwajima (via Uchiko), and express trains Eastward from Matsuyama bound for Okayama and Takamatsu. Note that the train for Okayama/Takamatsu separates further down the line, so it's best to make sure you are in the right carriage.
The line does continue from Uwajima to Kochi as well. I've never caught this train, so I don't know what it's like.
Ehime is well accessible by ferry.
From Matsuyama, there are boats to Hiroshima, Beppu, Kokura, Yanai, Iwakuni, Moji, Kobe and Osaka amongst others.
Imabari has a service to Hiroshima, Yawatahama has services to Kyushu, and there is a ferry to Osaka leaving from Toyo and Niihama ports.
Imabari also has services going to various islands in the inland sea.
All JR Shikoku stations are now numbered.
As Matsuyama is at the end of the Yosan line from Takamatsu, and the start of the Uwajima line, it has two numbers, starting with Y and U respectively.
