One of the twelve originals
by Mr.Sparkle
Sakai city (near Fukui city) is actually home to one of the twelve original castles left in Japan. It’s hard to believe but it’s very much true. Maruoka castle, which dates for 1576, is a actually a tiny castle and the inside doesn’t really contain much, besides pictures of other castles, but the entrance charge is nominal so its not a big deal to pay. The entrance fee is worth paying just so you can get a closer view of the outside of the castle. If you’re serious about castles, than you should stop here, being that it’s an original, but for most they can easily skip it. I, however, have been there three times.Don’t expect to spend more than a hour at this place though and Sakai city really contain much to keep you. At the bottom of the hill there is a small museum (admission included in castle ticket).
