Canal City is a large complex of fashion, theatres, restaurants and hotels.
It is supposed to be designed for young people. It is not like an usual department store.
There are a lot of fashion and sports shops in the shopping section. No local shop but all well known.
In the same building, there is eating section and theatre section.
I liked the building since the shape is not square, interestingly distorted and the site has a courtyard with a canal.

Hakata Riverain is Fukuoka's most sophisticated multi-function complex opened in 1999.
Its light-filled modern buildings comprise a clever selection of fine shops, dining, culture, offices and a luxury hotel.
Outside, elegant European-style boulevards sweep to the banks of the adjacent Naka River and the nearby charming Kawabata area.

Canal City is not just a mall, it's an entire area where you can find tons of great things to look at and buy. The mall itself is filled with trendy name brand shops, including the Gap, North Face, Eddie Bauer, and so on. Around the mall, there are lots of little shops, and a long shopping gallery that spans over three blocks. The gallery has lots of places where you can buy crafts, clothes and other fun items.
What to buy: The best shop that I found was in the long gallery. There was a wonderful paper shop that sold writing and craft paper, as well as gorgeous paper prints. Also, look for tea and tea services, including all the accessories. You can also buy Japanese print fabric (for all you sewers and quilters out there).
What to pay: I spent about 1000Y in the paper shop, and bought two prints and two packages of calligraphy paper. I also got a stamp made for about 1500Y. I'd say that $1USD is just under 100Y.

Tenjin Underground Shopping Arcade, the cobblestone walks leading to the Tenjin Subway Station add a quaint atmosphere to this underground arcade.
Shops in the arcade bring the fashion of Tokyo, Paris, and New York to Fukuoka.
The mall is also connected to about 20 nearby buildings and shopping facilities, allowing shoppers to avoid bad weather.
JR Hakata Station is also only a mere 5 minutes away by subway.

Canal City is a huge shopping mall on the edge of Nakatsu and a 100 yen bus ride from both Tenjin and Hakata Station area.
The mall has numerous shops, restaurants, 2 hotels, a cinema complex and theatre.
Sometimes I would come to Fukuoka just to hang around this place! It is my favourite shopping place in Kyushu.
What to buy: You name it you can get it at Canal City! It was a great place to pick up items that fit foreigners too!
What to pay: This isn't a cheap place to shop.
