Around the end of February or start of March, every spring the Cherry blossoms come out. They last for a few weeks, and then fall like snow.

  • Directions: Fukuoka is full of canals, and many of them are lined with walking paths and cherry blossom trees. I think the nicest area I saw was the pathway/canal beside Canal City, the large shopping mall near to Tenjin area.

You can easily and cheaply (Y200) rent cruiser bikes from your hotel for the day, and explore.

Girl and I got bikes from Central Hotel.
Toured around Tenjin, explored the Castle/park grounds, and made our way to the beach area, beside Fukuoka tower.

The city is full of cycle paths, and the sidewalks/roadways are made to accomodate bikes. Many places to stop for snacks/drinks.

Great area for riding around. No hills, so the girl loved it.

Hawks Town enfolds the Fukuoka Dome, a hotel, a live theatre (Zepp) and shopping mall area.
Shopping mall is designed and the shops are attracted mainly for teenage young people.

It maybe a Fukuoka's answer to the Tokyo's Odaiba area.
    Shopping, hotel, amusement complex.
This can be a tourist trap for a traveller from some large cities. But definately one of Fukuoka's must sees.

The home stadium of Fukuoka Daiei Hawks which is one of the best pro baseball team in Japan.
The Hawks was to compete with Hanshin Tigers the championship of the year in this dome from the very evening I arrived in Fukuoka.

    2005 update:
Fukuoka Daiei Hawks has been changed into Fukuoka Softbank Hawks.

In the area under Fukuoka tower is a beautiful sandy beach, great for swimming!

There are restaurants and shops there, so no need to bring food/drinks.

If you're up for it, you can pedal from downtown to there in about 20 minutes. Once you get to the general area, you can ride along the sea-wall/pathway.
For lazy fatbodies, you can take a bus to Fukuoka tower and walk to the beach from there.

Easy to bus or bike to, Fukuoka tower offers an excellent view of the area.

There are three observation floors at the top, all enclosed. Pay a small-ish fee to take the elevator up, and you can stay on top for as long as you want.

At the base of the tower are a few shops, a display/museum, and sometimes a monkey man.

The Fukuoka castle, was built in Fukuoka in 1601, and called Maizuru castle.
A part of stone wall and canal, and the Tamon tower are still left in the figure of those days now.

At the present, the area around the ruins of Castle serves as the Maizuru park, and here is a famous place of the plum and cherry blossom.

Japanese cars are pretty uniquely styled.
Add to that much custom work, and you have weird looking cars that you don't see anywhere else in the world.

Tenjin is a great spot to kick back, grab a Chu-Hi from the local 7-11, and watch all the oddball vehicles (and miniskirts!) cruise.

From Tenjin Station, follow the sign to Tenjin Omuta line. Buy a round-trip ticket to Dazaifu (780Yen) a historical town, just 30 minutes away from Fukuoka. You need to change for another train at Futsukaishi Station for local Dazaifu commuter train. Maps are available at Tenjin Omuta Line ticket office where you buy the ticket.

After getting off at Dazaifu Station you'll see a line of stores, traditional-style. Just cruisin' down the street, within a sight-distance you'll find Dazaifu's famous Tenmangu Shrine. Take your time stroll around the site before walkin' furthur to Kyoshu National Museum (please read my next comment)....
