In the area under Fukuoka tower is a beautiful sandy beach, great for swimming!
There are restaurants and shops there, so no need to bring food/drinks.
If you're up for it, you can pedal from downtown to there in about 20 minutes. Once you get to the general area, you can ride along the sea-wall/pathway.
For lazy fatbodies, you can take a bus to Fukuoka tower and walk to the beach from there.

You can easily and cheaply (Y200) rent cruiser bikes from your hotel for the day, and explore.
Girl and I got bikes from Central Hotel.
Toured around Tenjin, explored the Castle/park grounds, and made our way to the beach area, beside Fukuoka tower.
The city is full of cycle paths, and the sidewalks/roadways are made to accomodate bikes. Many places to stop for snacks/drinks.
Great area for riding around. No hills, so the girl loved it.

Japanese cars are pretty uniquely styled.
Add to that much custom work, and you have weird looking cars that you don't see anywhere else in the world.
Tenjin is a great spot to kick back, grab a Chu-Hi from the local 7-11, and watch all the oddball vehicles (and miniskirts!) cruise.

If you have some time and don't know what to do, go to Momochi area and just walk around the town. I bet you won't get regret! It's totally different from the busy zone Tenjin and Hakada, it's a beautiful residential area with very nice Japanese styled houses and modern buildings. The town is definetely designed as an all which looks different from other cities that every house or building is designed with it's own business. This brings a diversity of the architectures along with a good order.
The nice artificial beach site is a good surprise with white sand and open ocean view, and the Fukuoka tower just adds the harmony to the city.

The Fukuoka castle, was built in Fukuoka in 1601, and called Maizuru castle.
A part of stone wall and canal, and the Tamon tower are still left in the figure of those days now.
At the present, the area around the ruins of Castle serves as the Maizuru park, and here is a famous place of the plum and cherry blossom.

If you have a chance visiting Dazaifu, please consider coming to Kyushu National Museum, too. The architecture itself is pretty amazing and the inside exhibition space is really remarkable. It tells story on how Japan developed its own nation, culture and people. On the concept "We capture the formation of Japanese culture from a viewpoint of Asian history."
Museum closes on Mondays.
