Kitakyushu is twinned with Norfolk, Virginia. The dogwood tree was introduced to Japan from there, while the Japanese donated cherry trees to Norfolk. There are plaques and information boards commemorating the friendship between the two towns on the walk to the Kanmon Bridge. There is also a large anchor memorial. Good viewpoint for the bridge and strait.

    Hobashira Cable Car

The main picture is the night view taken from Mt Sarakura and this picture shows the cable car that takes you half way up. Mt Sarakura, in Yahata, dominates the Kitakyushu skyline and is a good compass reference. If you have access to a car then drive half way up and then take the cable car. Alternatively you can take the train to Yahata Station and then walk up to the Hobashira Cable Car. From the top you can see nice views of the city and the mountain area behind Kitakyushu.

    KAWACHI RESERVOIR

    Kawachi Reservoir, Kitakyushu

This is located in the hills behind Kitakyushu in the same range that Mt Sarakura is located. This picture is actually taken from the top of Mt Sarakura.
It is possible to walk or cycle around the reservoir and there is an interesting folk village store you can look at. Nearby a new spa was recently built.
To get to Kawachi you can take a bus from Kokura Station (number 1 bus is best) to Okura. From there you must change to another bus. There are direct buses but I forget the number!
