Self Cooking Bento

by walterwu

Lunch/Dinner from Bento box may be common in Japan. This self-heating bento box is rather amazing. Pull the string on the outside of the box and the food inside is heated up instantly (don't try to hold the container inside after pulling the string). It gets very hot almost immediately. These are for food that needs to be eaten hot. Most bento boxes food can be eaten without heating up. As a matter of fact, it is best eaten without heating up.Prices generally range from as low as 500Yen to 1,500Yen depending of the food choices.

Smoke Everywhere

by walterwu

In almost all eating outlets, the place would have cigarettes smoke smell or see alot of customers smoking away. Some eating outlets have smoke free area but not implemented. The only smoke free eating outlet I experienced was at Arcakit (Kinshicho) in a small eating house at the 10th floor. They will have a list of customers waiting and their preference for smoking or non-smoking seats. Our experience there was a pleasing one. However, in most other places including KFC, Subway (except Subway at Ginza), etc, forget about smoke free area if you want to dine-in.

Kyu-Shiba-rikyu Gardens

by apondigorot

KYU-SHIBA-RIKYU GARDENThis garden is one of a pair of feudal era clan gardens surviving in Edo (modern-day Tokyo). The other is Koishikawa Korakuen Garden. The Shiba Detached Palace Garden is a classic, strolling, spring-fed garden pond-centered garden freaturing rock and land formation. The land on which the garden is located was originally under the shallows of Edo Bay, but from 1655 to 1658, this area was reclaimed and in 1678, came to be used for official residence of Okubo Tadatomo, an official of the ruling Tokugawa Shogunate. When Okubo build his samurai style residence, he brought garden designers from his clan fief in the Odawara area to Edo to build the garden that became known as gRakujuen.h This residence passed though the hands of several persons and finally, during final years of the Tokugawa Shogunate, it became the official residence of the Kishu branch of the Tokugawa...

Lockers

by salisbury3933

Any train station of significance in Japan has lockers of various sizes. If you're just hopping off the train for a couple of hours, it's very convenient to dump your stuff in a locker, and come back and collect it later.Varies in cost between 300 and 600 yen, depending on the size of the locker.

Getting Money in Japan

by Alitoyota

There are several ways to get money in Japan. Foreign issued credit cards (visa, mastercard etc.) can only be used at Post Office ATM's and at ATMs in 711 convenience stores. Be advised that post office ATMs are NOT 24/7 and are usually only available from 8am to 8 pm (the exception is Kyoto central Post Office where the ATMs are available 24/7). There will be a post office anywhere you visit in Japan so this is always a good bet. Japan is still a cash society so you can not reply on them being accepted in shops and restaurants. Always carry Japanese yen cash! You can not spend pounds sterling or dollars in Japan.I found some really useful information here:Getting Money in JapanI also recently discovered that traveller's cheques have a much better rate of exchange than cash. They are a pain to exchange at banks (often taking 30 minutes) but at the airport it takes 2 minutes and the rates...

Flying Garden, Expo 90 Osaka

by hopang

The Flying Garden at Miki House Amusement Park located at International Garden and Greenery Exposition (Flower Expo) held at Tsurumiryokochi Park in Osaka, Japan was every visitor's favourite attraction at the amusement park! At its peak, it was the highest point where you had some breath-taking and spectacular views of not only the amusement park itself but also the Sea of Life (artificial man-made lake in the expo ground) and the entire exposition ground and the surrounding city of Osaka.
