by HeidiR

Tokyo takes several days to travel around. The best way of getting around is the subway, its worth buying a days ticket for 710 yen if you are going to several places in one day.Ginza has many shops but is also near to a park. the river has many big fish and turtles. Imperial palace is worth a visit even though you can't really get in. Food is very intersting in Japan, so much variation and its hard to identify what is what.below is a picture of the temple in asakusa and the look into Tokyo from Ginza

by cosmopolit

walk over Magome pass to the upper Kiso valley. The scenic walk on Magome was just unreal it made me understand what's meant by radiating powerful nature. Somwhere along the way through the woods I believe to have encountered the most quiet and peacefull spot on earth. It was absolutely still apart from my heartbeat.I now call Japan the land of water as there seems to be more streams flowing from anywhere then at home in Switzerland. Gurgling gushing dripping and running's been a permanent sound throughout the trail. Private waterfeatures like a pond, waterfall or a waterwheel look pretty standard in the countryside on most every property.

The view from my roon in my host parents house was amazing. There was a beautiful landscape of rice fields and mountains. My fondest memory of Japan was hiking that mountain with my host parents. My host sister was not the hiking type, so she sat at the base of the mountain while we went up. I have a great picture of my host mother and I at the top of the mountain flexing our muscles for the camera! She was soooooo cute!

I would like build up my Atami page here. The famous 'hot spring' in Japan. You can book a hotel with this facility and enjoy it after one day travel. I don't know how to explain the feeling, but trust me, you can't miss it if you're in Atami!!!

I'll miss all the staffs from the information centre. If you can't speak Japanese, you still can travel by yourself. In the information centre, at least one staff can speak fluent English. You can book the hotels there or if you want, they can book it on behalf of you. (All train stations have information centre)The information centre provide all information for tourist, you don't have to worry anything. Just ask if you're not sure. They'll answer your questions in details. Make sure you got all answers before you leave. Trust me, you don't have to speak Japanese in Japan, at least for me!

by RahulGarg

Japanese people mostly don't understand English. So if you're travelling for the first time, get your sign language skills sharpened. They would try to help you, but its upto you to explain to them what you want. Once we were slightly off the way from the nearest station, and it was pretty late in the night. We asked a woman for the directions in our crude sign language, and she could somehow make out where we were upto. She went to her house, got her car, and dropped us to the place. I think that was quite gr8 experience.

Visit the Shakotan Peninsula...

by PeterSt

Visit the Shakotan Peninsula (pic), south of Otaru, near Sapporo. Take the train and then the bus. MUCH better would be to get a rental car from Otaru as the buses to the Peninsula is not too frequent. Must see the volcanoes near Toyako (Mount Usu-san and Showa Shin-zan). Swim in the hot springs of Noberibetsu next to Hell Valley, and eat lots of crab in Hakodate. The volcanoes, crabs, sake wine...and the hospitality of the people

The People - they are the sweetest, most generous and selfless people you will ever meet. They will do anything for you - I mean it! Our honeymoon over there was taken care of by about 5 different major Japanese Corporations I had business relationships with. Tours were taken care of by other smaller Japanese firms. We did not pay for one single thing. If only everyone was so generous (not talking just financially). The Japanese are so proud (and rightly so) of their beautiful country. You will not be dissapointed!

WABI SABIYou know this words mean? As my translation, it's like hide, silence, stoic. It's Japanese typical spirits from old times. For example, I'd like to mention 'Japanese tea ceremony'. For a long time ago, there were some people who built each ceremony style. some person were constructed a quite tiny room (just 1 meter height because we sit straight for this performance) far from other temple only to perform it by himself.Have you ever felt something like spirits from Japanese culture or structure? Modern that is getting changed you know, but everybody has something spirits like it.Do you want more info about it? Go to 'Chanoyu Club'http://www1.odn.ne.jp/~cas30550/chanoyu-e/index-e.html

take the trains wherever you...

by Devyn

take the trains wherever you go. It's an adventure in itself, trying to read the ticket machines (especially if you can't read any kanji), and figuring out just how to do it. It is, once again, a perfect example of how smart and efficient the Japanese are. Fondest memory.... oh, that's so hard. I'll choose walking around the streets of any big city; Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo, Yokohama, etc. There are people everywhere, little hole-in-the-wall places to eat, people on almost every corner passing out tissues (sounds wierd, but they are cute little packets that usually have some kind of advertising on them and always come in handy later on). The side streets are so small and cute with temples all over the place that you are welcome to walk around inside and take pictures of. And of course the vending machines! I know everyone mentions these, but it's true, Japan has some very strange vending...
