Take some time to go nowhere. ...

by Andrei222

Take some time to go nowhere. Just sit for awhile in a sidewalk cafe or small park to absorb the drama of the culture all around you. We miss the friendly, kind people. When we got off the train in Tokyo's Meguro Station, two teenage girls saw that we were a little confused about which exit to use. They approached us to offer help even though neither spoke a word of Eigo (English). Fortunately, I was able to communicate what we were seeking, and we thanked them with words and bows. In a country where strangers do not talk to each other, this was very touching. The next day, we were back in Meguro Station, trying to get to Tokyo Station, but we could not yet use our Japan Rail Pass, so we stood before the ticket machine, unsure of which button to push--we only thought we knew the right way to use it--we went to the nearby Hilton Hotel gift shop and asked a clerk--she got another clerk...

by Toade

Visit the Imperial Palace is a must. Even though you can only get into parts of it -- really only just the perimeter -- it's a very impressive place. The grounds alone are very impressive -- a forest, water, etc. Even though Tokyo is a weird, ugly city that looks like something that fell out of Blade Runner, the Imperial Palace adds beauty and wonderment to a very old city. I was in Osaka, and sitting on a concrete-thingy next to some water, covered with graffiti of varying types. But, the water was perfectly calm except for a few shimmers, and the citylights would reflect in the water. A little distance away, there was a small group of kids selling something, or asking for donations, I forget now, dancing and chanting trying to attract passerbys to their cause, and drifting from an open window above us, someone was listening to Kabuki music.

Go to Kamakura and see the Daibutsu after wandering many temples and shrines along the way. The serenity of his face, the weathered beauty of his robes, wonderful. The Adachi Art museum in Yasugi. The town is so small and boring that the tourist map outside the station offers sites such as a factory, and Dr Watanabe's office....But the museum and its gardens are magnificent. My first glimpse of the garden, after paying half price entry of 1100 yen (with your passport) took my breath away, and I had to drag myself away from it.

When I visited Japan I had several opportunities to visit temples and stone Buddhas. One of my favorite temples was Kinkaku-Ji Temple, also known as the 'Golden Temple'. No picture can do this sight justice, and I cannot download the ones that I took so this one will have to do. Another amazing site is the Bomb Dome and the park surrounding it in Hiroshima, but I can't find an online picture of it, SORRY!

See temples and shrines (of course!), eat something other than sushi, act polite, let looneys practice their English on you, watch some silly Japanese TV show (there are LOTS of them!) and shop 'til you drop!! Meeting so many great people and finally understanding that the more I think I know the less I know, as someone usually thinks different and what does it matter anyway?! ;)

by Lutz_H

You shouldn't miss the Kyoto/Nara area in central Japan. The most beautiful site of traditional architecture in Japan and a huge number of museums make this the to-visit-spot. I however always prefer nature and - no offense - as there is not much left in this highly populated country I enjoyed the most the small peninsula of Izu, a five hour drive south-west of Tokyo. It depends on your preferences and taste but I checked out Okinawa, the most southern island in Japan, and was very disappointed. If you're not into vacation in a resort - stay away. I have to admit the resorts are like little paradises, but all artifically created with beaches illuminated in purple lights at night, and if you leave the hotel it doesn't look much different than everywhere else in the country, a lot of concrete to prevent erosion and a high air pollution due to the always heavy traffic. Yet, there are of...

mdchachi's General Tip

The Food. Japanese food is wonderful and I miss it big time. Not only Japanese cuisine but all types of foods are great as they are prepared with much fresher ingredients and higher quality than in the U.S. None of that generic frozen commercial foods crap that you'll find in all the chains and diners in the U.S. I suggest eating at an izakaya where many small dishes are ordered and shared. One can try many different Japanese foods and, since the plates and portions are small, not feel bad if a few are not found to be agreeable.A brief description of some Japanese foods follow, ordered by 'safest' to most 'adventuresome.'kamemeshi -- this is simply a baked rice dish. Various toppings such as shrimp and vegetables can be selected. How much safer can you get?tempura / ten-don -- various items (vegetables & seafood) lightly fried and served with rice. Another safe and yummy dish.tonkatsu...

The most memorable part of my trip was Tokyo...there was a lot to see right in the capital city of Japan. I only wish that I could have stayed longer. The best day in Japan was the day I went to Ueno Park and to the Zoo. I went on a Friday and I think every kindergarten in Tokyo must have been on a field trip that day...there were so many kids.

by Archie_Oak

Onsen....Simply Mind Blowing!!!Oooops.......no cameras are allowed inside!!!!To single out from all the must do activities in Japan, is the Hot Springs!!!At some places this Hot Springs are enclosed, but yes, you must visit an open air Hot Spring. Nothing could be more relaxing than it!!! It is separate for Ladies and Gents as you are not allowed to wear anything when you enter the Springs. Yes, its compulsory that you enter the Springs naked. They say the dew drops that touch your body, beautifies you all the more!!!The place where I had been near Nagoya city, is all hidden in woods. All you can see around is green.... Your trip to Japan would be incomplete if you miss this experience of Hot Springs!!!
