Eusko_Tren's General Tip

by Eusko_Tren

Japan:Capsule Hotel Fontaine Akasaka4500 / nightHow small can you make a room for someone to sleep in?In Japan, there are Capsule Hotels - each guest leases a sort of plastic coffin. It's usually around three feet by three feet by six feet, with a TV and a light hanging from the ceiling. It's enough room to sleep and maybe sit up. But the only thing separating you from the rest of the capsules above, below, and all around you is a little cloth curtain. So if you're laying in there, and someone walks by, they're inches from your bare feet, and if any of the forty to sixty other gents sleeping in the same large capsule-filled room snores or coughs or gets a mobile phone call, you're gonna hear it.Bearing this in mind, I rolled into the Capsule Hotel Fontaine Akasaka with earplugs. It had been a late night wandering Roppongi... I was looking forward to sleeping in. The rooms are so small,...

by lampface

There were many instances when we visited the main tourist attractions that we ran into groups of school children. They all seemed to have assignments to converse with English speakers. They basically said hi and asked how we were doing and how we liked Japan and then they needed us to sign an autograph book that they made. They were all really cute because they were so shy about it.

learn at least some of this...

by LAOWAI

learn at least some of this very difficult language BEOFRE you go- if at all possible, as A LOT OF JAPANESE SPEAK A LITTLE ENGLISH and VERY FEW SPEAK A LOT. Make an effort- it will pay off. Japanese people are among the friendliest in the world. I was there a week and I met a man and his wife waiting for the train. He continued speaking to me in Japanese even though I understood next to nothing of what he said. He sat across from me on the train.Thirty minutes later, after i tried using my phrasebook to speak to him about fixing my carborator and other useless phrases, he spoke the few words of English he knew : You My Offi-Su- Happy Happy. Now, 7 years later I still call him Otosan, or father. He treats me like a son so it's only fair.Plus he takes me on helicopter rides- and that's pretty fun, except when he flies and scares the bejeesus out of me because he's not very good at...

by o00o

Bring at least a Japanese Romaji / English dictionary with you as most of the Japanese doesn't speak English. There is an improvement after the trend to learn English as you can experience yourself when looking for some help from youngsters. Upon arrival, make sure you have enough Japanese Yen in hand, because you can hardly find money changer on the street except the major bank or you can change at the airport...

If you make the trip to Japan...

by Nomad_2001

If you make the trip to Japan you MUST spend some time there. There is just so much to do and so much to see it is mind-boggling. I think a person would really have to live there a whole year before getting a truly full experience of Japan.Tokyo is a magnificent city and a very very safe city. You can literally walk around Tokyo at any hour with little fear of incident. Of course, as with any country it is always good to be cautious, because even Japan has had its share of incidents in the wake of recent economic turmoil. When you are in Tokyo you MUST open yourself up to all the culinary experiences that are unique to Japan: don't shy away from Sushi and Sashimi, indulge in the Sukiyaki and Noodle Soups (the Sen houses), and don't forget to try 'okonomiyaki,' Japanese pizza. I was really saddened to see Americans traveling to Japan for the first time craving to go to the typical...

You should really be...

by japan-tour

You should really be adventurous and explore the real life. Don't go to McDonalds or other western restaurants. Japanese are kind people and will help you to find your way or food. Be patient and get used to pointing out what you want.I also reconmend that you learn to say please 'kurasai' (ie sake kurasai) and thank you 'domo arrigato'. You will see how far you can get... Everything was great. The great food, japanes style guest houses ryokan and japanes bath ('ofuro' = public bath and 'onsen' = natural hot spring) are a must see, though. Visit our japan-tour report and see the whole trip for yourself... http://www.japan-tour.de :-)

Take a trip south to Nagasaki....

by BorderHopper

Take a trip south to Nagasaki. There is much to do in that city and it has a long, both sad and wonderful history. Nagasaki was the second and last city to ever be bombed with an atomic bomb and the atomic museum is a must see. Nagasaki was also the first and probablly only Japanese city settled by westerners. The Portugese & Dutch were the first Europeans to arrive and the Dutch even had a settlement on an island near Nagasaki. In the 1800's the English set up a hilltop community which is now called Glover Garden. My fondest memory of Japan was my time in Sasebo on the southern island of Kyushu. My family had lived there while my father served in the US military and this was my first time back since I was an infant. I also had a wonderful time in Nagasaki which for me was my favorite city. It had charm, it wasn't overdeveloped, and nothing could beat travelling around the city by...
