Take the time to get off the beaten path. There is a lot to see in Japan. While there are many awesome places in and around the big cities, most of my enjoyable times were spent in places most foreigners don't get to often. I really enjoyed the smaller towns and small shrines and parks best. I really would like to get to the o-bon festival in Sakaide again. It is a perfect example of the off the beaten path senario. Sakaide is a small city in Kagawa Province on the island of Shikoku. Small Sakaide may be but they know how to have a festival. The floats in the festival were unlike any I had ever seen before or since. It was a nice surprise to be able to take part in the festival.

visit the Roppongi Cross, very exciting area at night, well lit huge number of restaurants etc etc. Make sure you visit the Gold Shop on the Ginza. Even if you can't afford to buy anything. it's worth a hour of your time. Every thing is solid gold. Leave your credit cards at the hotel.!! I wrote the foregoing sometime ago, and now this is a very important update. When I was out late at night in Tokyo, I often wondered why it was so difficult to get a taxi when there were lines of them wth their 'For Hire' signs ON!! They simply refused to accept me asa fare. I had watched as people held up two fingers or three or sometimes four. I learned later that this indicated they were willing to pay twice three or four times the normal fare. This is what the taxi drivers were waiting for. There isn't much you can do about this, but it's as well to be aware of this practice, particularly if you are...

Take in the view from the Rainbow Tower in the city of Niigata on Japan's western coast. It was constantly amazing to me just how crowded and built up Japan was, even outside of Tokyo. (Did you notice the golf course on top of the skyscraper in this photo?!)

by Beachcomber

Visit an onsen (Hot spring). It is a pool which has natural hot springs flowing into it. It is very hot but good for the body. Firstly you go in to a room where you undress (you are given a small towel which you can use to cover up if you wish. We cheated a little and used large towels (which are meant for drying) and no-one seemed to mind. This was quite a large pool though. For smaller pools probably just stick to the smaller towel. Anyway go in and you need firstly to wash you entire body (so as not to dirty the onsen water). At the onsen I went to, we sat down and used a shower and bucket to wash our entire body. Once you are clean step into the water very slowly as it will probably be quite hot. Once you have got into the water you can relax and enjoy the hot springs (you may have to get out occasionally as you may find it too hot). The hot water relaxes your muscles and you feel...

try some authentic food dishes. Get some tempura, sushi; try there many sobas, yakisoba, katsudan, and sukiyaki. Try some green tea or drink iced coffee. They have many vending machines that dispense both hot and cold drinks. I enjoyed traveling by bus, train(bullet and regular),subway, and car across the length and width of Honshu, Kyushu, and Okinawa. I enjoyed seeing the many cities and towns. My most memorable was Nagasaki!

by AldenM1

visit Kyoto! Tokyo's fun, but Kyoto is beautiful. Tokyo's modern, but Kyoto has kept a lot of that old-Japanese charm tourists often want to find. Plum blossoms, temples, sand art, noodle shops -- everything you want! Walking along the canal in Kyoto and watching little children play with the plum blossoms. It sounds cliche', but that's why I loved it!
