axmor's General Tip

by axmor

Another fine memory that I'll always keep in my heart is this very special gift given to me at the end of my trip to Japan. It reads: 'Life is very short and the life of cicala is very short, too !'I am not sure and cannot remember what Cicala is , perhaps an insect? Don't know.

by axmor

I must say I was very fortunate to make this trip because of my job at that time, having the opportunity to visit many cities such as Tokyo, Onahama, Yokohama, Kobe, Nagoya. In Tokyo, you must go to the Tokyo Tower which is an Eiffel type tower, very impressive.Yokohama, which is about an hour from Tokyo, is close to the Kamakura area where is reknowned by it's Great Bronze Buddha or Daibutsu. I would say to mingle with the people in the city, to become part of it, to eat in a small japanese place...you will not regret it, the japanese people are very warm, extremely polite.

by Kazu

We call it Fujisan. It's a beautiful mountain, almost perfect in shape.Japanese have a very special feeling for it. Some consider it a place of pilgrimage. Others climb it just for the challenge. Fujisan is the highest mountain in Japan. It's 12388 feet or 3776 meters high. It's an inactive volcano. The last big eruption was in 1707. When the weather is clear, we can see it from some parts of Tokyo. And we can usually see it from Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. That is a popular resort area.

by LadyL

Yokohama my home town! China Town, Yamashita Park, take a cruise, walk around the park, have lunch at New Grand Hotel or Hotel Yokohama. Go up Marine Tower for the view. Go shopping at Motomachi. Take a tea break at Kikuya, have a milk shake at German Bakery. Sankeien Park, grand Budha in Kamakura, Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura as well. Don't foget to have dinner at Katsuretsuhan in Isezakicho. Serenity found in Japanese gardens, visiting shrines and temples, cherry blosson in full bloom as seen from Gaijin Bochi, numerous little coffee shops, noodle shops, little back street markets. Sumo wrestling, kabuki and noh performances.

Ship ahoy!

by CliffClaven

For those with only one day to spare in Tokyo, take the all-inclusive ticket for travel by train, bus, cable car and galleon - yes, galleon! - to Hakone for a sail on the lake and views of Mount Fuji. Get back to Tokyo to eat yakitori (grilled chicken pieces) in a red lantern pub under the bullet train tracks in Yurakucho and then off for an evening of revelry in the expat haunts of Roppongi.

Memories of Japan

by CliffClaven

Sushi on Shikoku, the Ginza girls with their stunning fashion sense, service with a smile, Sapporo beer, cherry blossom beside Lake Biwa, fireworks over the Sumida river, a day at the sumo basho (contest), remote villages in the Japanese Alps, the misty outline of Russia from the northern tip of Japan, shogun fantasies at Himeji castle, video game arcades, Nara deer - and those long scalding soaks in Japanese baths.

by erniel

Take a ride on a Shinkasen (Bullet) Train. It is like flying on the ground. We went from Tokyo to Kyoto in 2.5 hours, a distance of 500 kilometres. The friendliness of the people. We had some fantastic times at Toshio Shimadas Izakaya (Bar) at Abiko in Chiba Prefecture just out of Tokyo.A 5 hour Kabuki Theatre show at the Kabuki Za Theatre in Ginza Tokyo was a great experience. As was the meal at the Onagi (eel) restaurant that followed.

Go to nara and visit kyoto's surroundingsSee tokyo's lights. I saw loads of young japanese pupils, waiting calmly, with their strange uniforms on : black trousers and vest for the boys (from a French lycee) and white socks, miniskirt and blue top for girls !I understand why Japanese men get excited with mangas !

by electromania

Whether you want to hook into the local ex-pat hangouts, bars and clubs (or in some cases just know where they are to avoid them), find out some good places to unwind or see a few sights, find a place to stay, find a job, or anything else along those lines it's best to get a couple of the local newspaper for foreigners. While the lonely planet and time out guides are great for general travel ideas the local gaijin rag can't be beaten. In Tokyo look for the tokyo classified (web site is www.tokyoclassified.com), in Fukuoka it's the metro. For other cities just ask anyone you meet where you can find the local gaijin paper. If they're young and speak english they WILL know.Remember, as in all other asian countries, patience is a virtue, most problems are solved with a simple acknowledgement TIJ (this is Japan), but if you smile look happy and want to enjoy it it will be one of the easiest...
