The Statue of Life, Expo 90 Osaka

by hopang

The Statue of Life was the landmark of the International Garden and Greenery Exposition (Flower Expo) held at Tsurumiyokochi Park in Osaka, Japan. It was certainly one of the popular tourist attractions during the duration of the Expo 90 Osaka which lasted six months from March to September 1990. The statue provided excellent background for any beautiful souvenir snapshot!

International Exhibits, Expo 90 Osaka

by hopang

Our fondest memory of Expo 90 International Garden and Greenery Exposition (Flower Expo) held at Tsurumiryokuchi Park in Osaka, Japan was the International Exhibits at Aqua Hall where exhibits of plants and flowers from around the world including our home country Malaysia were displayed. The exhibits were so beautifully, colourfully and neatly presented so as to attract your eyes with delightful fragrance steaming out of fresh flowers and plants. Although Expo 90 Osaka is history now but the memory of those exhibits and fragrance is still fresh in our mind!

1. if you are taking Long hour train, please ensure you reserve a seat first!2. to travel long hour train, preferable take the night train, so you can save 1night accommodation.3. The Train is very on time, so please be punctual.4. Most restaurants drinking water and tea is free, you can save money on buyingmineral water, just carry a bottle with you and refill it in the restaurant.5. Is very hard to get people who can speak english in japan... so a goodtranslation book is essential..

How much is your daily budget in Japan

by joiwatani

When travelling in Japan, expect to spend more. A daily budget for a person to truly explore and experience the country (excluding museum entrance fees) range from $22.00-$40.00. For me, I always have a budget of $65.00 because I have to buy some snacks (drinks), souvenir items (postcards), etc.The food, however, is very inexpensive. There are so many tiny restaurants where you can grab lunch/dinner for about Y6000 to $1000 ($6-$10).Your budget will include bus amd train fares in and around the city. Here's why $22.00-$40.00. The bus fares depending on where you are going range from $2.00-$5.00 one way. So, that would be $4.00-$10.00 to go back to your hotel. Your breakfast, lunch and dinner would be from $18.00-$30.00.I always have brunch so that saves me money! I eat at about 11:00 am because most hotels have free coffee and tea. You can make your own in the hotel. So, for a family of...

The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci

by hopang

Our fondest memory of Japan was the witnessing of the giant mural painting of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci at Garden of Fine Art pavilion at International Garden and Greenery Exposition (Flower Expo) in Osaka in 1990. The Expo '90 was held at Tsurumiryokuchi Park in Osaka. Th painting was a reproduction of the original with almost the same size on ceremic plate. The reproduction measures 432 x 886 in contrast to the original which measures 460 x 880. For your information the original is located at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. The reproduction is now located at Tadao Ando Garden of Fine Arts Museum in Osaka. The museum has reproductions of many famous masterpieces on ceremic plates.

Costs in Japan

by Jim_Eliason

Lorrian,Things can be very expensive in Japan but they don't have to be. A meal can range for $10 to $200. The key I found is to get off the tourist path to where the locals eat. Sushi and formal sit down restaurants are expensive but you can find little lunch spots and noodle shops where you can get a reasonable meal for a relatively cheap price. You can also make your own meal from a convenience store for $5-$10.My only experience was in Tokyo which is more expensive than the rest of Japan. You should plan for about $100-$120 a night minimum for hotel (air/hotel packages can often yield a better hotel cheaper than otherwise), $30-$40 per person for food a day. For souvenirs, those that would cost you $5-$10 in the US or Europe will cost $25-30 in Japan. The $20 thing is probably $50. This is based on exchange rates 5 years ago so that may have changed a little.Bottom line is you can...

Credit cards usage in the provinces

by joiwatani

The people of Japan are not used to using credit cards. They usually carry cash whenever they go shopping. There are many stores in Japan that don't use credit cards so when travelling in the provinces of Japan, make sure to bring cash. Also, if there are stores that accept credit cards, and the charges are more than $500.00, the store clerks usually ask you, the card holder, to show a lot of identification and they sometimes get freak out. They ask the managers to assist them in putting in the purchase. I was held shopping one time because they asked me: "Ikai demasuka? Nikai demasuka?"That means that they are asking you if you wanted your credit card bill once or twice? Never heard that before shopping in the United States but that is kind of cool that they don't bill your credit card one time. I was shopping at a local thrift shop in Ibaraki, Japan when I showed them my credit card....

Coming to Japan for the 1st timers (hikers)

by KevinMichael

Lots of questions. I'll tell you what I know:1/ How widespread are hostels across Japan and would you need to book prior to your visit (late June, first half of July)? There are hostels in a number of the bigger and more famous cities. But, many of the lesser known and smaller cities don't have any at all. As far as booking in advance regarding hostels, I just don't know. I'll ask my staff about their experiences (as they've used them in Japan) and get back to you on that part.2/ How restricted would we be if traveling by rail, (i.e. can you get to mountain resorts by rail)? Some places you can get by rail others you can't get there by rail alone. In my experience, I would usually go by rail first and then by bus to places that I went hiking at.3/ Do you need to have reservations to stay in mountain huts? Maybe. But, I have stayed in a few places with no reservation (and I wouldn't have...
