Arashiyama

by StoneRiver1

I don't know what the person means by limit yourself to 5 temples. Its absurd. Japan's heritage is a mix of many asian cultures, in addition to their own 'animism', as they call it. All the temples in this country have unique characteristics, and therefore, in my opinion, are worth a visit. If you are limited to a certain number of days, then pick the temple or shrine whose picture catches your eye in a brochure. I had the opportunity to live in Kyoto for a year, and its hard to turn a corner and not see an eye-catching attraction. If you have the means, I suggest making your way to Kyoto and renting a bicycle. You can even buy one cheap (used at about 3500 yen, or $30 U.S.). The city is laid out on the Chinese system, most streets running north/south, east/west. This is a unique city for Japan, because it has street names! The city is pedestrian friendly, and plenty of nightlife can be...

Take a Shower in Japan!!!

by Marisola

One of my favorite things about Japan is taking a shower there. I've never noticed these things in any other places, so it is worth mentioning...Their water is soooooooooooooo fabulous!!! What does this mean?!? It's very hard to understand until you've experienced it, but I would say, to me: The water in Japan is the softest and wettest water in the world!!! I mean, that when you take a shower there, although there is fabulous water pressure, you cannot feel the water hitting you! It is that soft... It is so beautiful!!! It is hard to imagine if you've never tried it, or thought of it...Another thing -- if you have very soft hair -- like me, some of your hair may fall out in a regular shower (like at home). In Japan, my hair does NOT come out at all -- and it even starts to show a little curl, too! I love it!!!

budget travelling

by efoo

http://grace.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgiCheck this out for train schedules. It has been extremely helpful for me in planning our 6pax 12-day trip just end April. I had to change our iternary as I discovered that it's nearer to go to Mt Fuji(Fujisan) from Tokyo(2 hrs) than Kyoto(4 hrs). I agree that 7 day rail pass is sufficient. $3K is really tight for 2 unless you don't mind staying in backpackers. (between $45-$70 SGD)for a double room. Bentos are still too expensive to eat. We ate at Ramen shops and those with pay by vending machines shops are cheaper (around $300 - $500 yen for a bowl of noodles)

Postal Services

by cheesecake17

Mailboxes in Japan are usually square or cylindrical in shape and colored red and are marked with the familiar postal symbol and the word 'POST', and feature a mail collection schedule. It's also displayed at stores and shops that sell postage stamps, revenue stamps and postcards and sometimes it's used on printed materials to indicate the postal code. For items such as registered mail, parcels, or mail too large for the mailbox, take them to your post office counter. Most mailboxes are double-slotted with notices according to the type of mail (e.g. 'Letters /Postcards' and 'Others') while some slots are marked according to destination.
