where to go...

by Cherr08

Hello: Tokyo is a great central area to start with. It's easier to travel to other places from Tokyo since there are more shinkansen (train) routes to the 4 main island. Before you plan your trip, you have to consider the season. Its almost summer and if you do not like hot weather, then you have to go to Northern Japan (Hokkaido)first. If the weather does not bother you then I recommend that you go to the following:Heritage - Kamakura and Yokohama are close to Tokyo. About 1-1.5 hrs bullet train. Kyoto is farther South, but if you love history, traditions, and culture, then this is a wonderful place to go to.Hiking - Fuji depending on the weather and Nikko up North offers heritage and nature in one.Nature - Hakone-Fuji-Izu. Too many tourist since its so close to Tokyo. If you go there, better stay there for a few days so you can manage your time depending on the visitor off-time.**Do...

Let's Learn Japanese!

by Pixiekatten

Some tips on learning Japanese on your own.Rosetta Stone is very good learning software, but before you use it it is not a bad idea to know some Japanese already. I found it went from very basic to quite difficult a bit too fast...http://www.rosettastone.com/personal/languages/japaneseCheck with your local library. I found course litterature called 'Genki' and it is used by universities in Sweden that teaches Japanese. See link:http://www.amazon.com/Genki-Integrated-Course-Elementary-Japanese/dp/4789009637For an online dictonary:http://jisho.org/It is real good. Gives you words in english and japanese in both romanji and kanji.Read and learn the pronunciation guide before training your vocabulary! Some words can get a new meaning if you say it wrong! This is a very good guide:http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~bestor/easy_pronunciation.htmJapanese is a hard language to learn but it is...

What Guidebook To Buy

by Pixiekatten

First of all, before even recommending which guidebook to buy I have to say this: don't forget to check out VT! This is sort of an online guidebook and many people here got great pages and many tips that you might not even find in a guidebook you'd buy! :)But when it comes to buying a book I always go for Lonely Planet. (Not only Japan but when I went to Korea and China as well.) I've tried others but end up buying LP in the end. Gotten used to the order they explain things. * First general info and history on the place * Sights* Entertainment and places to eat and drink* Accomodation * Transport to get there and away + getting around* Daytrips (if there are any places of interest around) Lonely Planet are always very detailed and most of the time put out all prices on accomodation and in restaurants. Plus they got different levels depending how much money one is prepared to spend. So...

Namba station ticket window...

by SfumatoPants

You can buy a ticket package at the tourist window of the Namba Station in Osaka. This includes all the transportation costs involved. Get the $40 package as it includes express service there and back again. I bought the $32 one which involved express to and local back... believe me, after a day of walking and walking and walking you don't want to take the local back. You have been warned.

suitcase

by pinkclover

I forgot one more things......I think people misunderstand a bit here.....for suitcase space yes, for narita express they have space to put but for sinkansen I had a little space. ask if you are buying a checket for green seat put you in the end(each carrige end seat has bit of space if I remember correctly just ask if the have a space), if not then just put aside. I'm sure people doesn't mind as long as you show them respect.

japan

by pinkclover

couple days ago I spoke to my mother(she's in Nagoya) and she told me it's warm over thete. So, for Japanese warm means more than warm to you. I sugesst to bring Sweater/freece for evening, shirts(long and short), pants(not thick) long and short. enjoy staying Japan. If you go to Kiyomisu temple checked out this shop "ebiya ryu-san" Address: shimisu bus pool mae, gojo-saka, higashi-ku, kyoto-city. Tel(075)551-3883. I bought gift to my friends they are nice and good price, and didn't take much place to put in my suitcase.yuri

Random Information for traveling around Japan

by cmarsek

This is not really a favorite thing...just general Japan travel info.I'm currently living in Korea, but spent 18 days in February backpacking around Japan. You might want to check into the Japan Rail Pass, which you must purchase from a travel agent outside of Japan, and then turn in your receipt for the actual pass when you arrive in Japan. As far as your locations, there is really very little to do in Osaka. I'd highly recommend (as someone else already has) that you instead use Kyoto as your base of operations in that region and Nara, Osaka, and Himeji are all day trips from Kyoto. If you choose to go to Osaka, there is the Aquarium and the Dotombori area with its neon lights. I stayed with my friend at a co-ed capsule hotel in the middle of the love hotel area a short walk from the Dotombori area. It was called: Capsule Inn Namba and you can access its information here...

To drive or not in japan

by cheesecake17

Because of urban traffic congestion, driving within Japan's major cities is not recommended for foreign visitors. However, driving on main roads between cities is an alternative to public transportation. If you intend to drive in Japan should note the following:On main roads most major destinations are sign-posted in English. In rural areas this may not be the case. If you are planning to drive in more remote areas, then buy a reliable English-Japanese road atlas before you depart. Companies such as Shobunsha and Kodansha publish these atlases. Driving in Japan is on the left. Parking can be difficult to find in some urban centers..An International Driving Permit is required. You will also need to be in possession of your national license while driving in Japan. Highway Tolls are very high. Toll charges will depend on how far you wish to travel and which roads you intend to take....

On your honor

by DSwede

Honestly speaking, there are few places in this world where people are as trusting and trustworthy as in Japan. You can take my other anecdote as a testimonial or the fact that there are still some vending machines out there where you can buy cigarettes, beer and countless other things on the street. They might be lessing in numbers, but if you look, you can still find them.If these were in less civilized places, they would be used and abused.
