Japan has fifty-two nuclear reactors supplying approximately 33% of the country's total electrical energy. 80% of Japan's energy sources are derived from foreign countries. Nuclear energy is seen as a necessity to accommodate energy hungry Japan.
Genkai Nuclear Power Station
Tours offered at Genkai Power Station and others like it are obviously for PR purposes (Japanese people are not real happy about living by them), but on the other hand getting to see how a nuclear power plant works first hand is pretty educational. I was fortunate that at the time I was staying with the family of the President of the power plant. So, I was given a special tour not normally available to the public.
The public are given tours provided mostly in Japanese. But, guided tours in English are also available.
