The Shiroyama Viewpoint is north of the village center and offers nice views of Ogimachi and its farmhouses. The viewpoint can be accessed via a walking trail (closed in winter) in about 15 to 20 minutes from the village center or by a shuttle bus, which stops outside the Gassho-zukuri Minkaen open air museum.

Gasso-zukuri farmhouses

Ogimachi village is home to several dozen well preserved gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.

The farmhouses are quite amazing structures, designed to withstand the harsh winters while providing a place to work and live, and are best seen either covered in snow or surrounded by green fields. Many of the farmhouses are now restaurants, museums or minshuku, where you can stay overnight.

Slightly out of the way and away from the madding crowds stand these 3 photogenic houses. Photographers pitch their tripods for the perfect lighting and shot. In the settlement stands many of these interesting photo spots so follow the guidemap given out free at the tourist information counter for good spots. Any avid photographer's dream place.

Take the shuttle bus from near the tourist information counter towards the vantage point where you can get the best view of the settlement. It almost looks like a scene out of a child's bedtime story book.

A view of the open air museum from the third floor

Old, original farmhouses from all over the region have been transported, lock, stock and barrel to Gasshozukuri Minka-en, a sprawling open air museum. The farmhouses show you what life was like for the inhabitants years ago, and some of the people's farming implements are showcased.

Some of the farmhouses are open to the public and you could poke around inside, and climb up - very carefully on rickety ladders - to the second or third storey for a bird's eye view of the entire museum. The views are gorgeous.

If you get tired from exploring, one of the farmhouses contains a small tea house where you could wrap your hands around a cup of warm tea.

When the snow has melted, the museum is supposed to be very picturesque, with a pretty little stream running through it and blooming flowers and greens all over. We visited in spring, and there was still snow all over the place, and it looked very pretty too.
