Sanmachi Suji are three narrow streets in the center of Takayama's "old town". The streets are lined with traditional buildings, stores, sake breweries and private homes. Some of the buildings house museums on folk art, local history and more. There are also some elegant former merchant houses open to the public. You can sample locally produced sake and stock up on souvenirs.
A nice alternative to exploring the beautiful area on foot is renting a rickshaw, costing about 3000 Yen for two persons.

33 carpenters took 15 year (1910-1925) to complete this 1:10 scale replica of the Nikko temple complex. This replica of Nikko-Toshogu consists of 28 buildings, Main Shrine, Worship Hall Five storied pagoda and so on.
The entrance ticket is a combination ticket with the Floats Exhibition Hall of the previous tip.
As we were about to visit Nikko a week later we were very curious to see this replica. And we were not disappointed. The detailed work on all the buildings was just amazing.

If you cannot be in Takayama at the time of the Spring and Autumn festivals you still can see four of the eleven floats used in the festival procession. The floats are changed every few months so all eleven floats are on display for a few months. This means you have to visit more times in a year......
Each float is different in style and decoration, reflecting the tradition of the district in Takayama to which it belongs.
All this is explained by guides. But if you don´t speak japanese their is a recording in english for you to listen to. Immediately when we entered someone came up to us with a card in english asking us if we would like to take the taperecorder to guide us. We did, and it was full of info about the festival and the floats. Just return the taperecorder at the end. This service is free.
Entrance fee was 820 Yen in april 2003, with this ticket you can also visit the Sakurayama Nikko Kan next to the Yatai Kaikan. More on this in our next tip.

The Shorenji is on a hill overlooking the town. It originally stood in Shirakawago. (see our Gifu ken page for more on this area). It was brought to this site, in 1960 due to the construction of a dam. The Main hall, is dating back to 1504, is said to have been constructed from just one giant cedar. The hall can be visited for 200 Yen.

Takayama Jinya was a local government building. In 1603 the Tokugawa family established a new government in Edo. In 1692 the Hida province came under direct control of the Tokugawa government. From that time officials were dispatched from Edo and administered the affairs of the state in this office for 177 years. The Takayama Jinya is the only remaining government building of that period. Originally there were 60 local Jinyas in the Tokugawa government.
