It is the tourist centre of Gifu ken, but you have to visit it once in your life. It will be great if this is during the festival (14 -15 april). The festival is one the top 3 in Japan. But if you want to pay a little less for accommodation and food just visit any other time.
In Takayama you can wander through old streets, visit temples, musea and more.
More of this town full of tourist sites on our Takayama page.

Nature in Gifu-ken is just awesome. The mountains and the many lakes.
We just loved it. As we did not have good weather (most of the time it was raining), we decided to put Gifu-ken on our 'to do' list and visit again in the (near) future.

Next to Ogimachi is the Gassho Zukuri Minkaen, an open air museum with 25 Gassho buildings. Most of the buildings are relocated to this 5.8 ha museum when the building of a big dam floaded a large area in the neighbourhood.
There is little english information, but just enough to understand. The Gassho houses thanks their name to the reed roof that looks like two hands in prayer (Gassho). The roof has this steep angle because of the large amount of snow in winter.
The museum is open from 9:00 - 16:00. Closed on thursdays. We payed 500 yen entrance fee.

You can see all the Gassho houses of Ogimachi from the Tandobai lookout point. At least if you have better weather then we did. Our view was very little, because of the heavy rain.
