Kagura is a specialty of the area in which I live (North of the prefecture). It is Shinto legends which are acted out on stage through dance and speeches. The legends differ from place to place but all contain heros and devils and if you are lucky dragons and Queens. It is truly a rich part of japanese tradition that you shouldn't miss. The music is unique and when professionals are performing, the synchronisation with the music is beautiful. The music is made up of a large drum, small drum, flute and a metal clappy instrument(the name of which I don't know!).
There is a Kagura Theatre in Midori-cho, the town next to mine and it is called the 'Kagura Monzen Togimura.' During Kagura season there are performances every Saturday and Sunday but I will find out some more details for you shortly.
Access is best by car but if you only have public transport then take the bus along the Chugoku Expressway which runs between Osaka and HIroshima and get off at 'Midori'. From there it is about a 2 or 3 km walk along one main road and it can't be missed. You could even try hitchhiking!
For photos from a local production see the travelogue: Kagura

    Sukkei-en garden

There is more than the Peace Park in Hiroshima city. Shukkei-en garden is a beautiful place for relaxing in the late afternoon, after been walking around the major sights.

It was originally designed in 1620 by Nagaakira Asano, a feudal lord ruling this district.

27 mins by train + 10 mins by ferry from Hiroshima is the celebrated shrine on Miyajima island.
Acclaimed to be one of the 3 most beautiful spots in Japan, Itsukush ma Shrine is a must for everyone who made it as far as Hiroshima. Give yourself at least 4 hours to discover the beauty of this island. I shall upload all my photos of this amazing little island when VT has a locator for it. In the mean time, please proceed to its official site for further information.

I thought this was kind of odd to have out in public, but who am I to say. It's a statue of 4 naked chicks. We saw it on our way to the Castle.
