Hiroshima is famous for it's local version of okonomiyaki, named here hiroshima-yaki (egg-based savoury pancakes). The specialty is that it is made with soba (noodles). Other ingredients can be chosen, mostly it contains some vegetables with seafood.
The Okonomimura village is a grouping of some 30 minirestaurants. Some of them have English menus as tour groups are often brought here.
Favorite Dish: There is only one option: Okonomiyaki!! Try it, it's delicious, and take one with many different ingredients to make it more interesting.
For the Japanese, okonomiyaki is some sort of fastfood, but definitely better than burgers, and it's cheap as well!

When you are in town, you've got to try Okonomiyaki. You must!
As the name describes, Okonomi means "whatever you like", you pick and choose the ingredients, so no need to worry about eating somethings you don't know.
Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki is made by sandwitching vegitables and meat with crepe like skins.
Anywhere else in Japan, they just mix all the ingredients with flour, and bake it. Not good.
There are more than 20 Okonomi-yaki restaurants inside Okonomi-mura (mura means village).
Favorite Dish: Modan-yaki with soba-noodle, beef, and egg with lots of lots of okonomi sauce!

This teppanyaki steak restaurant, located on the ground floor of an office building is convenient if you have just visited the Peace Memorial Museum just across the river. It's very modern with its marble tables and bright lighting, and the skilled chefs prepare delicious steak and seafood before your eyes.

Gernerous portions is an understatement! The food here is outstanding and the atmousphere is plesent. Although the bartender or two may be Irish, the waitresses are all Filipina and they keep a smile on your face as the expeditiously bring the food.
Warning: Watch the first step into the pub, it's a step down which often gets unseen!
Favorite Dish: BLT and fries!

Okonomiyaki is a mixture between pancake and pizza. "Okonomi" means "as you like". This refers to the ingredients.
Hiroshima is especially well known for its Okonomiyaki, it is served with or on top of Yakisoba (fried noodles).
Favorite Dish: It wasn't a special restaurant we visited, we just happened to chance upon it during dinner time.
It was pretty late then and most of the shopping centers and shops are already closed so we just went to the 1st one we came across.
Its a small place and they only serve okonomi-yaki and tako-yaki. Its was alright but not fantastic.
Strangely enough, the best okonomiyaki I had was from Melbourne, Australia. Maybe I just didn't have the luck to eat the best in hiroshima. Maybe next time...

There is an entire floor with small restaurants in the JR station building. And such a floor can be found in the shoppingcomplex opposite the station.
Just choose the one with the best plastic samples in the window. Most of the times it tastes the way it looks.

My friend & I came upon this restaurant on our way to the Peace Memorial Museum. It is located along the banks of a small river. If you are leaving the Museum, walk to the northeast corner where there is a signal. If you cross the street & go down a narrow street next to a river, I think that is where it is. It is a wooden structure, built on stilts so that the restaurant is actually on the water. Traditional Japanese style-only tatami. Excellent view! We went in July & the sliding windows opened so we could enjoy the breeze as well.
Favorite Dish: The menu is only in Japanese. My friend & I wanted to eat unagi (eel) & fortunately it was available in a set box lunch! (The proprieter tried to explain as best she could what was available & I know food vocab). The unagi was amazing! Tender, juicy, cooked just right!
We lucked out finding this treasure!!

Its unique in the fact that it seats more than 10 people! It is big for a Japanese restaurant and has pool tables (which are incredibly scarce in Hiroshima) and an area for live music which admittedly I have only seen once since I've been going there but you may get lucky. If you are feeling starved of Western food by the time you get to Hiroshima and missing a real bar atmosphere then this is a little slice of home even for us non-Americans.
Favorite Dish: All the food is good- especially the fajita's, baked potatoes, pizza etc..... Its American food as it's part owned by an American called Kevin.

Any Okonomiyaki shop in Hiroshima.
Favorite Dish: Okonomiyaki means anything you like barbequed. It is a mix btween a pancake and an omelette with vegetables and your choice of pork, seafood, cheese etc. Okonomiyaki is done differently everywhere in Japan and one of Hiroshima's specialities is the way they do theirs. It has noodles in it which you can choose from thin or fat(soba or udon) and is wonderful. The sauce is what makes it so delicious so make sure you have a bottle so you can add more for yourself.
