The arcade stretches from Itsukushima shrine all the way to the Zonkoji temple. There are plenty of small shops and restaurants to fill the needs of tourists. It's always crowded with people, so if you're not into buying souvenirs, you might like to avoid it altogether.
What to buy: while in Miyajima, the local specialities include traditional wooden rice scoops and wood carving items, earthenware bells and Miyajima Hariko (paper dolls). Waffles in the shape of maple leaves are very popular, too.

So we found this shop selling "Miyajima Only" Hello Kitty stuff. One of them is the Hello Kitty Sand Garden. So we thought this cannot be "Miyajima Only" and we should be able to find it after we get back to Tokyo.
And we never found it again in Tokyo or Osaka.
So, don't be lazy when you see certain items sold in certain regions only. When they put it on the package, I guess they really mean it.

All the shops carry the maple leaf motif in some form on their goods. It could be a silk scarf or maple leaf-shaped cookies, but it is virtually everywhere.
What to buy: The maple flavored cookies are to die for!
What to pay: Under 1000 yen, or about US $10
