If you have a JR Rail Pass, you can take the ferry over to the island using the pass.

I always use 18 kippu, local train ticket for 1 day. The ticket was also valid for the ferry from Miyajimaguchi station to the island.

To go to Miyajima island, take a ferry from Hiroshima. Either from Hiroshima Port (high speed boat 25 min) or from Miyajima Ferry Terminal located to the west of central Hiroshima (ferry 10 min).

There are several ferries travel to and from the island throughout the day. You can ride on one and return on
a different sometime later when it's convenient for you.

Both train and tram from Hiroshima go to the ferries. The JR Ferry is nicely covered by your Japan Rail Pass if you have one.

Right before the ferry landed, The captain usually take passengers for a spin right outside of the floating Torri. I found the spot great for taking pictures of the island.

Miyajima is not very big and the best way to get around is on foot. If you want to get to the top you'll have to go with the ropeway.
