Hokkaido has ideal climate and water conditions needed to make superior sake.
Otokoyama brews high quality sake on the island and is the most famous brand of sake in Hokkaido. In 1977, Otokoyama won the gold medal in The Overseas Wine and Spirit Competition, the first time for "Nihon-Shu", and has since continued to win gold successively for 28 years. By participating in global events such as The International Wine and Spirit Competition, The World Selection of Wines, Spirits and Liquers, The International Gold Medal for Quality to Wine and Spirits, etc, Otokoyama products have achieved high appreciation throughout the world as exhibited by the awards received.
The Otokoyama Sake Museum tells about not only the 340 year history of Otokoyama, but also about the history of sake making. There is free sake sampling for visitors.

Asahikawa's Shopping District Park is located in front of the JR Station and runs perpendicular to it. It is a pedestrian only mall and there are shops and restaurants on both sides. The side lanes of this mall has many gourmet restaurants. Ramen is the speciality of Asahikawa and there are numerous ramen shops scattered throughout the city.

The main event of this zoo is the penguin parade, and we were wondering what to expect watching this. Most of the people here on this day were also visitors to Hokkaido, primarily here for the Sapporo Snow Festival. As this crowd of people cleared a route and looked on, about 10 penguins appeared and marched on amongst the great excitement of the crowd, as proudly and grandly as any parade of the Japanese emperor...
Though in reality, the "parade" marketing somehow evolved as a side-effect, as the animal handlers' primary intent is simply to keep their penguins physically fit in winter by walking them twice daily round the park, thereby working up an appetite for their food.

There is a glass-wall moat for them to dive in if they wanted to, but I suppose it was way too cold this day for them to even consider about getting wet. Can't blame them.
