The Rapid Train Service serving between New Chitose Aiport and Sapporo Station is very convenient with the JR Rail Pass. Just flash the rail pass to the station master and get onto the train.
You need to purchase the JR Rail Pass voucher in your home country before arriving in Japan and head for the JR office at the Airport to exchange the voucher into the pass. For more details on how to do that, read my blog on the main Japan travel guide page.

The seats on the train are of reversible facing type. Just push or pull the handle at the top backrest towards or away from you to get the forward or backward facing that suits you.
The train service do stop at a couple of station between the New Chitose Airport and Sapporo Station. For schedule, refer to link below.

New Chitose Airport is the main airport in Hokkaido and the main building houses ANA and JAL airlines with code sharing with other airlines.
The terminal building is arc shaped and after passing through the immigration and checks, the place is filled with mini-stores (spaced at regular intervals) selling mainly souvenirs, gifts and bento boxes. Seems like all the shops are selling, relatively, the same products. The largest of these stores is located at the other end of the JAL side of the terminal building.

When I took the ANA flight from Haneda (Tokyo) Airport to New Chitose Airport (Hokkaido), the check-in (assisted by english speaking staff) via self-check-in terminals was very easy and smooth.
However, on my flight from New Chitose Airport to Kansei Airport (Osaka), the automated self-check-in terminals wasn't working and the queue for tickets/check-in was 100-200m long. Managed to work around and got my boarding pass after being lost for about 1/2 hour.
After passing the security, the signboard indicated almost all ANA flights were delayed. My flight would be delayed by 2 hours. They announced over the PA system that the aircrafts are under technical servicing. But almost all aircrafts?
I walked to the other side of the terminal building and all JAL flights are departing on schedule (at least that the display boards are showing).
My guess is that it could it be the 100-200m queue for check-in which would ultimately results in delays for passenger getting their boarding pass.
