I lost my modesty at the Onsen!

I lost my modesty at the Onsen!, Hokkaido

santeria01 Says:  Our gracious host, Honda Family and Ate Richelle's family, after taking us to the Asahiyama zoo and to the Sounkyo Ice Festival, brought us to take a bath at the Japanese "Onsen" (hot spring baths). I asked if I can wear my underwear while bathing, the answer was "NO". I had...

Asahiyama Zoo Snow Village, Hokkaido

Asahiyama Zoo Snow Village, Hokkaido, Hokkaido

santeria01 Says:  Our host family brought us to this wonderful zoo and we had our first real view of penguins, polar bears, white fox and pandas (not the white China panda though, but the brown panda which I think is a Japan local animal). Being exposed to an open air zoo under negative 16...

Sounkyo Ice Festival

Sounkyo Ice Festival, Hokkaido

santeria01 Says:  We were fortunate to be able to experience an Ice Festival (February was the month for these ice festivals, thankfully they opened early). The place features lots of igloos where there are carved animal statues in each one. Then there was this ice castle with lots of...

Abashiri - Cold ferry ride in Hokkaido

Abashiri - Cold ferry ride in Hokkaido, Hokkaido

santeria01 Says:  Okay, this event is supposed to let visitors experience a ferry ride on the sea full of small formed icebergs, where the ferry was supposed to slice through those small ice packs. Apparently the schedule was too early for ice packs to form (they say February is the best...

Ezo Yamazakura (Mountain Cherry Blossoms), Hokkaido

rugbyspark Says:  If you come to Hokkaido in early to mid May, you may get the chance to see these beautiful dark pink cherry blossoms which are native to the northern island. But timing is of the essence, since all kinds of sakura (cherry blossoms) appear and then fade within one week or so.

Frying Paan Pension - Annupuri, Niseko: Best European Food in Japan, Hokkaido

woolfer Says:  This pension was the cheapest we've seen in the Niseko region, and worth it. It's very basic (shared bathrooms, etc), but the family is really warm and welcoming, and the location is at the base of the Annupuri gondola. The food is also great - get the breakfast included....

Hotel Kurobe: Steak

Hotel Kurobe: Steak, Hokkaido

santeria01 Says:  So our host still is anxious about our food preference, so he brought us to another Hotel for our dinner for our second night in Hokkaido. He ordered steak for everyone! :-) I'm not a steak fan actually, but I just loved the steak served to us that time. :-) Also, they...

santeria01 Says:  We arrived a little early for the Abashiri Ferry ride, so our host took us to a nearby hotel for a quick lunch. We went to Abashiri Central Hotel and we had a buffet lunch there. Everything is good of course. I had lots of ebi (shrimp) tempura. :-)

Festa Garden, Zusco Mall, Hokkaido: Nice Buffet Lunch

Festa Garden, Zusco Mall, Hokkaido: Nice Buffet Lunch, Hokkaido

santeria01 Says:  Its a big buffet restaurant in Zusco Mall (hope I got the name of the mall right). The italian pasta is not tasty, but the japanese food, especially the ramen, was fantastic :-) I got a ramen fix from then on.For a buffet, the price is also good. Ramen!

Forest Kitchen Kawai: Great beef in Shikaoi, Hokkaido!

Forest Kitchen Kawai: Great beef in Shikaoi, Hokkaido!, Hokkaido

sapporofrench Says:  I had the chance to have lunch at the Forest Kitchen Kawai last month while driving around Tokachi. It's a local place, so nothing fancy, but definitely great food!! The beef was great (similar to the famous kobe beef) but much cheaper. The owner (and cook) was really nice...
