Fondest memory: I was there only during the night, but was impressed by the beauty and delicate planning of the city. There has been some good architects behind that, for sure, and the results are more than good. One of the landmarks of Kushiro are the countless statues along the main avenue, especially 'the four seasons' over the bridge. The one on the picture is 'Spring' (yes, that's the moon over her head).

Favorite thing: Well you can't come to Kushiro and not take a drive out to see the Red Crested Cranes between Kushiro and Tsurui. The best time to see them is winter, especially if it has snowed recently. Then you can get really great 'winter wonderland' snaps of the cranes frolicking in the snow. Also, there's usually blue skies in Winter. Summer is often a bit dull with all the fog about. I find that there's often a lot of cranes at about 3pm, but some people tell me that they're there in the morning too. Take the road to Tsurui and you'll see the signs about 20kms down the road.

Kushiro is the 5th largest city in Hokkaido (I think). Most Japanese consider Kushiro the end of the earth, or similar to Siberia because of the cold weather. Summer temps are lucky to reach the low...
