Hell Valley - Noboribetsu Onsen

by kielorla

In the Hell Valley, you can tried to drink some of the hot spring water. A little reminder, this water has strong sulphuric smell, but it actually taste quite alright. It taste more or less like chinese salty vegetable soup.

Sapporo International Snow Festival

by His_Beloved

If you are planning on visiting Hokkaido at all, make sure it's during their world famous snow festival that occurs every year in early February. Even though it's expensive to go during that time - it's worth it!! To make it cheaper, consider a pre-planned package from a travel agent that combines a ski trip with a night or two in Sapporo. I went with my friends for five days for less than $500 for air and lodging (that's a domestic flight from Kyushu).

Romantic Otaru

by naruto

Otaru is only 30 mins away from Sapporo and make a very nice day trip. It is a city surrounded on three sides by mountains and the fourth by the Ishikari Bay.The canal and its retro architecture makes it a very charming city. The stone and brick warehouses along the canal is a very popular photo spot for many visitors to the city. These warehouses now house shops, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. The canal is especially beautiful at night when oil lamps lining the cobblerstone streets will be lit lending it a very nostalgic and old-world feeling. The JR Otaru Station Tourist Information is at JR Otaru station. Tel: 0134-29-1333April-September : 9:00am-6:00pmOctober - March : 9:00am-5:00pm

Go see the Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival)

by KevinMichael

This is the coolest thing I've seen in Japan period. I left on an early Sunday morning by plane and was in Sapporo by 10:30 or so.I spent most of the day and that night enjoying all the snow & ice sculptures I saw.I flew back to Niigata in the afternoon the next day.
