    AWAJI ISLAND, THE ONION ISLAND

The Awaji Island is located between Honshu Island and Kyushu Island and connects both with the bridges Awaji in the north and Bes in the south. The Bes bridge allows to see a famous natural scenery, the water circles between the streams of the west flow and east flow, and the sensation is beautiful...and dangerous, because the boats cannot approach if they are small.

The world's longest suspension bridge opened to traffic on April 5, 1998. The 3,911-meter (12,831-feet) Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is 580 meters (1,900 feet) longer than the Humber Bridge in England, the previous record holder.
The bridge across Akashi Strait connects Tarumi Ward in the city of Kobe with Awaji Island, both part of Hyogo Prefecture. Construction began way back in 1988, and it cost nearly 500 billion yen to complete.

Although both Kobe and Awaji were severely damaged in the January 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, the new bridge will be able to withstand even bigger quakes--up to magnitude 8.5 on the Richter scale. It's also built to resist winds as strong as 288 kilometers (179 miles) per hour.

The bridge is part of an expressway link connecting Honshu, Japan's main island, with Shikoku by way of Awaji Island.

A ceremony attended by hundreds of school children was held in mid-March to mark the completion of the bridge. Initially, school kids from both sides of the bridge were supposed to walk across and meet halfway, but this had to be cancelled because of strong winds.

Around 300 students from Higashi Maiko Elementary School in Kobe did get a chance to walk on the bridge for about 500 meters (1,640 feet), though, and kids representing schools in the town of Awaji traveled aboard a bus to meet them. The students shook hands and exchanged gifts.

Tomonori Tamura, a sixth-grader at the Ishiya Elementary School in Awaji, said, "Crossing the bridge was a bit scary because it felt like walking along the edge of a cliff. But I had a great view of the sea."

    Higashimon Street in Kobe

If you are in Sannomiya district and trying to find bars and restaurant, then go to Higashimon Street. You will experience almost every dish and drinks you are craving for especially the local Japanese. You will see in the photo I posted the entrance to this street. It is walking distance from the Sannomiya Station. You won't miss it. But mind you, it is a narrow street and notice a bunch of trucks and all kinds of vehicles just in the entrance? but....does it matter? Go ahead, take a look!

    Full of Art
    by freddie18
Just walking on the street in Sannomiya District in Kobe, you will encounter art on the street, there are statues in every corner but one thing that amazed me is the artwork even on the manhole. It is no big deal actually, but this simple art also attract my attention. Do you see the difference with other manhole in other countries?

I miss the atmosphere and the feeling of a warm welcome from every local person.

On May 5th, we celebrate 'Children's Day'. It is the day to pray for the happiness of all children. We fly carp-shaped streamers on the day.

My old work was in the building on the right. Near all the best shops!

Shopping, having coffee and getting a really good 15 minute massage on my break just under the International Community Center (on the left).

Located roughly in the center of Honshu, Japan's main island, Kobe is easily accessible by land, sea, and air. It is about 3 hours and 20 minutes from Tokyo by Bullet Train, and 25 minutes by high-speed boat from the Kansai International Airport. Together with Osaka and Kyoto, it forms the focal point for the economy of western Japan.
The city is divided into two sections by the Rokko Mountain Range: the southern part which faces the sea forms the urbanized area, while the western and northern sections, known collectively as the Seihokushin area, have become the scene for the construction of large-scale new towns that maintain harmony with their natural surroundings. The urbanized area occupying 30% of the city area stretches like a ribbon 30km east to west and 2 to 4km north to south, and is home to 70% of the population. Kobe has a 3-tier structure: a port and industrial zone along the coast, residential areas on the hillsides, and mixed residential and commercial areas in the intermediate zone between the mountains and the sea.

Every year, there is a light display that is awesome and a must see if in Japan. It is called
'The Luminaire' One entire street is lit up with beautiful and colorful lights. Many people in the Kansai area/region visit. It is on display usually for one month. When walking down street, so many people doing at same time so your squeezed in.
This display is a Christmas tradition in Kobe.
On my last visit to Kobe, there were rumors of this being the last one to be held...
