If you are visiting Kobe, I would recommend you take the JR Subway train. Subway system in Japan and Kobe in particular is very convenient. If you are coming from either Osaka or Himeji, you have to get off at Sannomiya Station. This is the commuter hub in Kobe serving as the transfer point for the three major intercity rail lines, the JR Kobe Line, the Hankyu Kobe Line, and the Hanshin Main Line.

Sannomiya is a district of Kobe, Japan and the biggest downtown in the city. You will enjoy shopping at the department stores just right in front of the Sannomiya Railway Station.

  • The cabin of the ferry - Kobe
    The cabin of the ferry
    by kiwigal_1
Kobe is a major port for Japan and has a ferry service to different cities around Japan. I came on the Shin-Moji (Kyushu) - Kobe Ferry which was an overnight journey. We left the Port of Shin-Moji at 6.30pm and arrived Kobe the next day at 5.30am.
The ferry has communal baths (split for men and women) to relax in, a bar, a restaurant, games and karaoke rooms and offers both first and second class sleeping rooms. Pictured is the second class room where you are given a 'pillow' and blankets and you sleep on the floor with about 10 people to a room. First class has small cabins with bunk beds.
The trip cost 6000 Yen one way which is a very reasonable way to get between Honshu and Kyushu.

  • Use Kintestsu or JR line from Umeda station in Osaka. get off at JR Station in Sannomiya. Takes about 1/2 hour at most to arrive.Return same way.

Or use JR Station from Shin-Osaka to Shin-Kobe.
If this route used, cost is more for this is Shinkansen Train-(non/stop)

When traveling between Kansai International Airport (KIX) and Kobe, I have also use K-CAT
    Kobe Jet Shuttle

To reach K-JET Terminal ( Ferry Terminal ) from Kansai Airport ,take the shuttle bus service for Ferry Terminal from the bus stop at South NO1(Gate H/G) or bus stop at NO12(Gate A/B) located on the first floor of the Passenger Terminal Building. Shuttle bus takes 3 minutes.
Bus fare is free. Bus is available every ten minutes. Bus will take you to Ferry Terminal, this is where you will depart for Kobe K-Cat City Terminal.

At K-CAT Kobe City Terminal (arrival):
To get to Sannomiya, the center of Kobe, a bus service is available from K-CAT. It takes 18 minutes.

A taxicab is also convenient from K-CAT to the center of Kobe. (about 10 min.)

To Portopia Hotel, a courtesy bus service is available from K-CAT. (about 5 min.)

It takes 15minutes from Sannomiya to Kitano and Motomachi area on foot.

For detailed information on K-Cat, vsisit their webiste otr hompage:

Best way to travel around Kobe is to walk. (if know way around) by Taxi and by local trains. Travel in Kobe is excellent. Maps available in English at most stations and at bookstores.

Another way is by bicycle. You will see many parked near stations!!

  • Before arrival to Japan. If you intend to do lots of exploring and will be in Japan for month, pick up JR Rail Pass, available to tourists only. Must purchase in USA or Canada thru Travel Agent or from JTBUS-Japan Travel Bureau USA. For additional information, visit homepage of JTBUS at-http://www.jtbusa.com/

JR Rail Pass is your sight-seeing passport bargain to Japan. The most convenient, efficient, and economical way (in my opinion) to travel throughout Japan. You get unlimited use on all JR trains and JR buses in Japan.

The red rail pass shown is what you get when you purchase from JTB. You then exchange in Japan.
(see blue Japan Rail Pass, this is one you get when in Japan for using on JR trains)

    Shinkansen Vs Local Train.

  • Note that there's a stop for Kobe on the Shinkansen line called "Shin-Kobe", which is situated north of the city center / harbour.
I think the best bet is to take the local line from JR Osaka to JR Kobe, or JR Sannomiya. JR Sannomiya station is where the vibrant nightlife is. The chinatown is within walking distance too.
Note that "Shin-Kobe" and "Kobe" stop are different, and quite a distance between the two.

  • The best way to see Kobe/Sannomiya is to walk around. This way you can see more & not miss off the beaten track sites. Kobe/Sannomiya is not so far apart so walking is not a problem. If you walk on the shopping streets it won`t seem so long! Ha ha!

Shinkansen trains from Tokyo take around 3 1/2 hours to reach Shin-Kobe station. Local trains or metro take you into the city.

The JR line is a very convenient way to get around Kobe. It is quick and cheap. I never had to wait more than three minutes for a train to come by.

Link to route and pricing. Also checkout the link to "Sounds on the Subway", that brought back memories to me.
