I won't name one restaurant because it is simply impossible...
Restaurants abound in Kanazawa but, honestly, if you have come this far, you've just gotta try the fish!! Even in 'fish-crazy' Japan, Kanazawa is a culinary delight -- the freshest and best fish in Japan....and, with sushi (raw fish and rice) and sashimi (raw fish only) on every corner -- that says something!! The place to go for fresh fish is 'Kanazawa's Kitchen' -- Omicho Market. this open-air market in downtown Kanazawa has hundreds of shops that sell everything from leather jackets to French pastry -- and, the fresthest, best seafood that you could imagine at incredible prices. Located on the Sea of Japan, Kanazawa is the place to try the best seafood of your life.
The service. It is incredible and there is nothing in the world like the service that you will receive in Japan. I am still amazed everyday and, honestly, feel quite spoiled when I travel to other locales. From the second you step in the shop, restaurant, store, bus, wherever, you are pampered until you can't be pampered anymore. Constant smiles, almost-annoying-motherly 'Are you alright??''s and other worried comments, and wonderful 'Arigato gozaimasu' (Thank you very much - even when you buy nothing!) comments when you leave are bound to shock your dulled customer persona. Don't be afraid -- make notes and compare when you return home...you will be even more shocked at the 'service industry' in your home country. Lastly, and most importantly, do be afraid by the bellowing 'Irashaimase!!' (Welcome and at your service!) shouts that you hear everytime you enter a sushi shop or department store....it is a big genki (energetic) welcome -- and it will follow you everywhere you go in Japan....
Favorite Dish: Of course, sushi and sashimi. But, contrary to what most people think, food in Japan is not the 'sea' kind only. There are Yaki-niku (Barbequed meat) restaurants (where you cook the meat yourself), Okonomiyaki (a kind of big omlette dripping with barbeque sauce and mayonnaise) shops, Ramen noodle shops, and so much more. Japanese cuisine, which has its own amazing delicacies and also takes food from all over the world and makes it its own, has such a wide variety and, honestly, in five years of living here I am still 'experiencing' new foods everyday.
Ok, ok.....enough. I must remember that this is the 'Menu Item' section so I guess I should talk about the menu. In this corner of Japan, good luck finding a menu that is written in English -- it is Japanese or nothing. Yikes, what do you do if you can't read Japanese?? No problem....you are guarranteed to be 'assisted' by endless numbers of friendly, 'heart-of-gold' locals, each trying to explain the menu and 'recommend' their own favourites for your dining pleasure. It is quite a show -- and it still happens to me everyday.
