The warlord in Kanazawa put a strolling style garden next to his castle in the late 1600's. You will see a very large garden surounding a lake that was designed just to please the warlord family. There are many buildings in the old Japanese style, as well as karasakinomatsu pine trees. The pine trees grow very long branches that have to be suported, because they are so far out from the trunk

In the old section of the city, there is a Samauri's home that is preserved for your viewing. As a high level Samauri, he had a comfortable house with a beautifully peaceful garden with a stream running through it. The spring is populated with very large Koi.

Many 'must see' but here are 4 we enjoyed:
1. Kenroku-en Park is one of the most beautiful japanese style gardens in Japan. It might seem too manicured and artificiall to some westerners, but Japanese love it.
2. 'Myoryuji-Tempel'also called 'Ninja-Dera.' There were actually no Ninjas in this temple, but the monchs build many traps and hidden walkways in this very old building, that it will purely amaze you. You should really go there. It is very much unlike any other temple I have ever seen. (You must make reservations in advance!!!)
3. Go to see the old amusement area. Nice shops, restaurants and coffee bars located in a traditional Japanese neighbourhood.
4. The fishmarket is also very interesting. Some of the famous king crabs cost more than $200 per piece...

The local warlord had a castle overlooking the city. Here he could enjoy the view out to the sea, or just cross the street to his garden.

Kenrokuen Garden is one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan. (the other 2 are the Kairakuen Garden in Mito City and Korakuen Garden in Okayama City)

A wonderful city. Located on the west coast of the island of Honshu, Kanazawa is a major centre in western Japan. Modern and booming, Kanazawa is known more for its culture and arts than its business...
