Kofuen was built in 1911 as a villa for Katsutaro Kamata. The garden used Sanuki Fuji as borrowed scenery. Today, there are too many buildings built up around the garden to see the mountain. In 2001 the garden was updated to make it a strolling garden around the lake and the open lawn areas were also expanded. Then it was open to the public.

The garden is located near Sakaide Station. The train tracks pass by the garden at an elevation that makes the trains a sort of borrowed scenery as they come and go. Although much of the garden is quite new, it's still attractive and nice to walk around.

    Entrance is free.

Cable from the Seto Ohashi Bridge 4 more images

Yoshima Island is one of the islands in the Seto Inland where you can stop for a good view of the Seto Ohashi Bridge, as well as the Seto Inland Sea. Yoshima Plaza is also located here. This is where you can buy souvenirs from Shikoku or the Seto Ohashi Bridge itself, such as Watarou Setouchi, the bridge's mascot.

Although the island is mainly just an area to view the sea and the bridge, there is a cable from the Seto Ohashi Bridge on display for visitors to see its size and thickness (see picture). From its location in Yoshima, you can also look at the bridge to see the cables being used. If you want more information about the bridge, you can go to the information desk inside Yoshima Plaza for a book in English. There are also very helpful tourist maps of Shikoku available, if you are on your way to tour the island.

Travel to Sakaide is very easy from Honshu, Japan's main island. From Okayama City, you simply take the Marine Liner. The Marine Liner will stop in Sakaide prior to Takamatsu, so if you are going to Sakaide City on Shikoku, that's the best way to do it.

If you are travelling to the islands along the Seto Ohashi Bridge, then you'll need to drive on the bridge and take the exits to reach the islands.
