We recently travelled to Takamatsu from Kobe on the Jumbo Ferry. It is a very inexpensive, convenient and comfortable way to travel.
We caught the ferry bus from the bus terminal at Sannomiya Station (an hour before the ship's scheduled departure 200yen), which took us directly to the ferry terminal.
The ship is well set up for passengers with comfortable reclining seats looking through large windows out over the bow of the ship. There is a cafe on board, massage chairs, and a tatami room for those who would like to stretch out.
The journey takes about 3hours and 50 minutes and there is a courtesy bus to take passengers to the Takamatsu Railway station.
It is a very pleasant journey, sailing under the Akashi Ohashi and passing many islands along the way. It is also quite amazing to see the number of ships on this busy route. The cost for us was 1800yen. This compares extremely well with train travel.
The website (Japanese only) has maps and timetables.
