The Great Buddha by salisbury3933 The Great Buddha is possibly the most famous part of Kamakura for many people. It costs 200 yen to enter the grounds, and if you want to go inside the Great Buddha, you can for 20 yen. It's a well signposted walk from Hase station on the Enoden line. Leave a Comment

by kooka3 This 121 ton, 13.35 meter tall bronze statue of Buddha was cast in 1252 A.D. by the sculptors Ono-Goroemon and Tanji-Hisatomo at the request of Miss Idanono-Tsubone and Priest Joko, who not only originated the idea of building this large statue and the temple covering it, but also collected donations for it. In 1498, a tidal wave swept away the great temple of the Buddha, leaving only the foundation stones. In the 500 years since then, the holy statue has been exposed to sunshine, storms, and snow. The latest repair was done in 1960- 1961, to strengthen the Buddha's neck and to make it possible for the Buddha's body to move freely on the base to prevent a damaging shock to the statue in case of an earthquake. Hachimangu shrine by salisbury3933 This Shinto Shrine is a very busy place to visit, and there is a treasure museum attached that I didn't have time to visit. Not far from Kamakura station, and like most places in Kamakura, very well signposted. Leave a Comment

by sakurita Transfer from Kamakura JR station to the ENODEN line and get off at HASE station. you will find different attractions, but in deed the great budha is the most famous of all of them. You also can enjoy the gardens of the temple and the other national treasures. Do not forget to wash your hands where the little fountain is...it is to purify your self. And also take a bath with the inciense to get well and aboid bad spirits. Leave a Comment
