Getting To Odawara Castle From Odawara Station

Get off from the East Exit

After getting off at East Exit of Odawara Station, you will go along the wide road running between the buildings. (Photo #2). Then you will see a triangular plaza. Go along the right side of the plaza and soon afterward cross the street to enter the narrower shopping street leading to the outer moat of the castle. It takes about five minutes from the plaza to the bridge crossing the outer moat of the castle park.

From Tokyo you can only get as far as Odawara with JR-trains, from where you will have to use non-JR trains or buses into the Hakone area (see map). The socalled Hakone Free Pass is also available for use from Odawara Station.
By JR Tokaido Shinkansen you can access Odawara in about half an hour from Tokyo or Shinagawa Station , but note that only kodama trains and a small number of hikari trains stop at Odawara Station.
Alternatively, you can access Odawara from Tokyo in about 70-90 minutes by local or rapid trains on the JR Tokaido Main Line (stopping at Tokyo, Shimbashi and Shinagawa Stations) or the JR Shonan Shinjuku Line (stopping at Ikebukuro, Shinjuku and Shibuya Stations) for about 1450 Yen (one way).

From Odawara to Kyoto take the hikari trains every 2 hours or Kodoma trains

    Getting to Odawara

    Odakyu Local Train

There are a number of ways to get to Odawara from Tokyo.

JR pass holders can get the Shinkansen, specifically the Kodama version (the Hikari and Nozomi Shinkansens don't stop at Odawara. If you don't have a JR pass it costs around 3000 yen.

Otherwise you can get on the local train and get there.

Odakyu railways have both express and local trains headed from Shinjuku station in Tokyo towards Odawara and further onwards towards Hakone.

The Odakyu local train is the cheapest way of getting there from Tokyo (ideal for poor salarymen like myself), which costs 850 yen one way.

Take the "Kodama" express because it stops at Odawara station. "Hikari"and "Nozomi" DO NOT stop at Odawara. Therefore BE CAREFUL only to take the "Kodama" express from any location..

The Super Express (Shinkansen)" Kodama" from Tokyo station (JR) to Odawara station leaves every 30 minutes.

Departures leave from platforms #14-19. There are ONLY2 stops between Tokyo and Odawara Shinagawa and Shin-Yokohama.

Reservations are not required on the Super Express "Kodama in Ordinary Class".

However, within the "kodama" train, you can reserve more expensive seating in the Green (1st class) car. Both reserved (cars #8 through 12) and unreserved seating (cars # 1 through 7) is available in Kodama Ordinary Class. It takes 35 minutes to go from Tokyo to Odawara station.
