Rediscovering Old Tokaido in Yokohama 1

Even historical buffs have little idea that Yokohama is blessed with historical sites more than 150 years old before the port of Yokohama was opened. The best way to discover the historical aspect of Yokohama other than Chinatown or bayside area sites, is to walk around Tokaido. To starters, it is difficult to find Old Tokaido Road in the first place. Easy way to find is trace along National Route one. The narrower and winding road running parallel to the national route is often the Old Tokaido Road. The first leg of the Tokaido Walk starts from Higashi Totsuka station. From the Higashi Totsuka station East Exit, Aurora Walkway connects to Old Tokaido Road without meeting the vehicles.(See my transportation page for the ways to get to Old Tokaido from the station). After crossing the bridge extending from Daiei Shopping Mall, turn left from the small shrine. First destination is Ichirizuka Mound of Shinano #9 Ichirizuka milestone about 36 kilometers from Edo(current Tokyo).

Aurora Walkway thourgh the huge mall Cross this bridge Go along the narrow winding road Then you will find a pair of Ichirizuka Mound Map around Higashi Totsuka station

From the Ichirizuka Mound I turned back to westward trail to Totsuka. After going back the road I came from about three or four minutes Fukuju Kannon comes into view. Fukuju Kannon was built in 1982 to commemorate the opening of the Higashi Totsuka station in 1980. Then I saw the overcross leading to the shopping mall on the right side. To go to Totsuka I went straight ahead. Then you will see a woodboard sign directing to the right. The board also says to go straight ahead. Then you will see a flagsign leading to the overpass.

Fukuju Kannon built in 1982 Go straight ahead Don't Miss this signboard Go down the stairs Cross this bridge

Rediscovering Old Tokaido In Yokohama 3

After passing the overpass, go down further to the winding downslope called Shinanozaka, severed by the wide road until you find the broader road used for the bus line service. Before the broad road was built, Shinanozaka Slope used to be the steep slope down from the hilltop to riverside. There used to have a green tea cafe near the hilltop. After walking the road for about 10 to 15 minute you will meet Route #1. Then cross the road to the left side and see the mapboard carefully. Then cross the route 1 to get into the narrower curvy road.

Turn left from there Study this board carefully Go down curving road After walking broad road, you will meet Route #1 Again study this board carefully...

    Spot the stars

by bonio Written Mar 27, 2003

We were walking through a park in town and spotted two famous British ex-footballers, who were both in Japan working for TV companies. Ron Atkinson used to be Manager of Man. Utd, WBA and several other clubs, his pal Andy Gray was a Scotland international and played for many English clubs including Wolves and Aston Villa. They were very patient when we asked for a photo!!
