Nippon Maru

Built in 1930 and previously known as the "Swan on the Pacific".
This was a training ship for seamen.
It was retired, preserved in its original form and the captain's cabin and officers' salon are now open to visitors.

kodo kyoden buddhist temple

Kodo Kyoden Buddhist Temple is a man made tourist attraction that is not originally made to attract tourist. The main god of this temple is Mahakada (Daikoku), the God of Wealth. Unlike most of the temples in the world this temple is unique because it is not only a temple but a school also.

We briefly visited this museum, with a large number of exhibits. There doesn't seem to be any great pattern to it, but I liked some of the old coins on display, as well as old pottery from different parts of the world. There's plenty of English signage as well.

Of moderate interest. Entrance is 200 yen.

In the same building there is the Yokohama Urban History museum that looks quite interesting. Next time I'm in Yokohama I'll have to pay it a visit.

Yamashita Park

This is a pleasant place on the waterfront to visit. There are cruise ships in port most of the time, and nice views of the harbour. If you wish, there are harbour cruises that leave from here as well.

It's a short stroll down from Chinatown, and like everything in this area, well signposted.

Literally it means Red Brick Warehouse, and you'll see why when you see the photos.

There are a number of places to eat, shops as well as an ice-skating rink.

It's around 15 minutes walk from Chinatown, and well signposted.

Chinatown

Chinatown is very much a popular part of Yokohama to visit, and in Japanese style, food seems to be the main attraction, although it's a great place to walk around and take in the sights.

There are street vendors selling pork buns and the like, up to restaurants serving whole ducks. There's a huge range in terms of cuisine, from Taiwanese, Shanghai, Beijing, Cantonese styles, and also a huge range in terms of prices. This is not one place you'll ever go hungry!

There's plenty of shopping as well, but personally I would only ever buy Chinese souvenirs in the Chinese speaking world, not Japan.

motomachi street

Motomachi is a crowded, expensive, trendy shopping area. Kind of the Beverly Hills of Yokohama. Most of the stores are filled with purses, shoes, and expensive clothes.

In the old days the area was a shopping area where they originally used to sell daily goods to the foreign residents of Yamate.

It takes 15 minutes to walk from one end of this tiny area to the other and yet you would not believe that more than 250 shops are jam pack here..Motomachi is especially known for many renowned long-established shops where they guarantee top quality Motomachi goods.

Sales are held by all the shops in Motomachi at the end of summer and winter every year.

The mountain behind motomachi street is call Yamate it was/is a popular little hill for foreigners to reside on when Yokohama Port was opened to the world for international trading about 140 years ago.

Just up the hill from motomachi there are many foreign houses and churches ..
Minato-no Mieru-oka-Koen is the park where you can enjoy the view of the whole of Yokohama Port ... There is a view spot and a rose garden in the park ..

There is also a western grave yard in the front of the park, where gravestones with crosses can be seen.

Nippon Maru by Night

NIPPON MARU

Everyday when going to office we pass by ( while riding the walkalator) at the Nippon Maru however, I never had the chance to enter or visit the ship inside. I just wander and appreciate the beauty of the ship from the outside. They seldom bring down the sail of the ship and this is only done when there is a special occasion around Minato Mirai (national holidays or flea market around the area.

Entrance fee is Y600 for adults.
