Go to Gion area and have a walk to enjoy the vibrant night life in Kyoto. Not as vibrant as what I saw in Kobe, but not too bad.
There are many restaurants for dinner too. We went into a restaurant that is quite crowded with fantastic atmosphere. We ate something like tempura with salad. The sauce is quite special with sesame seeds. yummy.... Special sauce for the salad too.

Gion and Pontocho-dori: Geisha spotting in Kyoto.
Geisha or Maiko rushing through Gion - Kyoto

A stroll along Pontocho-dori or through Gion's back streets in the late evening, provides wonderful people watching opportunities. Spotting Geisha or Maiko becomes rather addictive and trying to photograph them as they rush imperiously to appointments is a challenge. The chauffeured cars with tinted windows and seemingly endless stream of taxis through Gion hint at a mysterious and intriguing world of activity, light-years from the average westerner's comprehension.

    HUB: Going Crazy
HUB was our place to watch the games during World Cup 2002. It was always packed and the japanese went crazy in there. The offer very good finger food and cheap drinks. It's a go!

    Doesn't matter.

Hoppy: drinking at somebody's rundown house. kinda.
So, you go into Hoppy, and it's like you walked into someone's house. Someone who has been on a bender for about the past three years and decided while they were at it to just put in some tables and let other people join in. The floors are tatami and there are sliding doors just as you'd find in a traditional japanese house, but they are dirty, grafittied, and have holes (eerily the shape of fists). The tables and dishes don't match, there is a random tv and random artwork, and a mannequin in the bathroom that can be seriously creepy if you've had a certain amount to drink. This is starting to sound a bit seedy, but it's actually really kitschy and cute and it works.
The food is cheap and good and various (typical japanese food for drinking... but the portions are huge and it's yummy, so I think it's totally appropriate to come for dinner). The selection of drinks is great as well, and it is also really cheap. This is just a nice place to relax with a friend or two, have some drinks and chat.

  • Address: a bit north of Kiyamachi and Shijo
  • Directions: If you are at Kiyamachi and Shijo, head north staying on the left hand side. After the Imagium building, you will see a narrow road, with lots of bicycles parked there. Just go down there, and Hoppy will be the first place you see on your left hand side.

Hub: Bar where expats and Japanese can meet
A bar that does cater to foreigners without going overboard. Has a great happy hour and good pub grub. Bar frequented by many Japanese.

    ING: Kiyamachi Nightlife
Great small restautant/bar located in the heart of Kyoto's Kiyamachi. Excellent place to relax with friends without the typical pick-up bar scene.

Kyoto Station: Many People Many Things
From The main hall of Kyoto Station. You can take an escalator to the top. All along the escalator for about 8 stories thereare seating areas and many places for different shows. It was very busy and entertaining the night I was there. The roof also provides an excellent view of Kyoto
