Since we were travelling with our toddler son we didn't visit the traditional bars and clubs that can be foubd all around Ponto Cho and the Gion. A nice alternative is to do some people watching during a long walk from the Gion, across the Kawagama River, through Ponto Cho, and into the "Floating World" of Kiyamachi-dori.

    Jumbo Karaoke (karaoke Boxes): Karaoke!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Karaoke in Japan is a little different than in the west. You don't go to a bar and you don't sing in front of a bunch of strangers. You go with your friends and you are put in a room with only the people you came with. You can pik and sing as many songs as you want. You are billed by ythe hour but it is fairly cheep. There are many many many Karaoke spots in Japan and especially in Kyoto but at our FAV spot you also get "nomihodai" all you can drink.

What you wear in. Just try to wear it out.

You don't have to go into one of the local clubs to kick back and enjoy the nightlife of Kyoto. Head over to Ponto Cho and check out the various street musicians who usually congregate around the underground train exits.

  • This street is the center of kyoto nightlife. You can see a pic of Kiyamachi on my homepage. This is a pic of a small street off kiyamachi... This streethas one of Kyotos ,ost popular bars... A Bar. Kiyamachi also claims home to ING, Africa, Hub, Rub-A-Dub, Haamid Kabaab and countless other bars and restaurants... What to do on a bored evening when you have money to burn???

Whatever you want. The Skys the limit. Are you lookinging for grunge and smoke, fancy shmancy or hostess type bars? They are all here.

    ING: Luv the CRUSH
  • Tip Rating:
  • Absolutely my FAVOURITE bar in Kyoto. A nice mix of Japanese on the Fringe and Travelers come together. ING is a small bar on the 2nd floor of a building on Kiyamachi just south of Hammid Kebaab. It is small and tends towards being crowded but the Owners are fantastic, the food is good and the beer is cheep. The besr rockING collection in Kyoto too!

A good selection of international beers, wines, spirits and reasonably priced Irish & European cuisine goes very well with the panoramic views of East Kyoto. Relaxed atmosphere makes McLoughlin’s Irish Bar a fine choice for both a late night snack and a cold Guinness on a weekend or a glas of wine after work. Open 6pm - 1am (until 3am on Fri & Sat)

SENT JAMES CLUB: Cocktails on the terrace
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are 2 Sent James Clubs in Kyoto. One in Honten and one in Ponto-cho. I went to the Ponto-cho one with my friend (who is I might add crazy about jazz). But Im not and you dont have to be a jazz person to come here! Its a nice, mellow bar. Dark wooden interior. Flickering candlelights to set that jazzy mood.. But the music is played very low - perfect background music! AND!! They have a terrace overlooking Kamogawa river. Perfect for a hot summers eve! If it should get chilly, they hand out blankets. The drinklist is impressive with many exciting cocktails. A bit pricy. But worth it! It's open Mon - Sat: 7pm to 2am Sun: 5pm to midnight There's a 600yen cover charge and extra if you want to sit on the terrace.

    Smart.

  • The information on the web about Kyoto nightlife in English, is geared toward foreigner bars and expensive clubs that have had the money to pay for a translation. There are however dozens and dozens of gorgeous little bars open into the wee hours of the morning. Here is one example: HATCH - Surreal all white interior. In the afternoon it is a cafe, while in the evening the food service begins and the cocktails start to flow. Enjoy the lights of the city, in a gorgeous bright open atmosphere. Open all year round til 4AM.

Most of the bars you would dress neatly for. As the Japanese usually dress well. Shorts are pretty much unseen.

    Gion Area: Gion Area
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Gion Area is a nice place where one can see well-restored traditional Japanese architecture. Most of them are restaurants now. Nevertheless, their decor and traditional feel still attracted my attention to take a close look at them.

Sarasa - Cento Cento - Soware - Ask a Giraffe....: Late night cafes in central Kyoto

  • Unless you know someone who knows it, you will never find it.... An example here is Sarasa, as it is up a flight of stairs with no signs or any other indicators on the street. I passed my bicycle here hundreds of times, never knowing such a cool place existed! Friendly staff, huge servings of food and yummi lassi (!) in this spacious renovated old Kyoto tea-house. Many of the ingredients are organic even! And their menu is in English as well as Japanese. I have included this late night cafe along with 14+ more on my external webpage.
