Kinkakuji Temple's Tea House - Sekka-tei: Japanese Tea
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Sekka-tei is a small tea house built in honor of a visit by Emperor Go-Mizuno-o in the 17th century. The simplicity of the tea house is meant to focus the attention of the guest on the tea ceremony.

Sekka-tei was burned down in a fire in 1874 and was reconstructed in 1884. The stone lantern and basin, along with a stool in front of the tea house all come from the Muromachi Period Hana-no-Gosho (Flower Palace). Inside, the teahouse is quite modest but contains a well noted, crooked pillar supporting the alcove. The pillar is made from rare Nandin wood, a very slow growing tree, and to reach this size is very rare indeed.

  • The Four Seasons
    The Four Seasons "Hama-chou"

Eating in Japan can be daunting at times as many places have only Japanese writing on the outside. Difficult to know if you will be able find something you like and then communicate it. For a more expensive dinner we found the very foreigner friendly restaurant called the Four Seasons Restaurant which is on the Sanjoyou Dori not far from the Pig and Whistle and the subway. Meals whilst not for the budget traveller were not too expensive either. The restaurant is extremely stylish and modern with sunken tables. The food was delicious. We had an English menu and an English speaking Chinese waitress who was delightful. On checking out the website of this restaurant I found other restaurants and bars that must also be run by the same people that would be worth checking out.

We had a squid salad, (can't remember the name) that was delicious. All of the food was "Gochiso-sama deshta".
Really is worth saying this if you enjoyed the meal, we found the Japanese were thrilled when I said this.

  • There is a hill behind Fushimi-Inari Shrine.
Arriving at the top of the hill, you will find a small restaurant. You can eat lunch there.(Japanese noodle etc.)
    The scenery is great!

    Kaiten zushi: my favorites
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a very popular rotating sushi restaurant with both locals and tourists. All plates are 120Yen and I suggest ordering freshly whenever possible, as it always tastes better than what's on the conveyor belt. When your are done eating, ask them to give you a "kaikei" (bill) and go and pay at the front. At Musashi, they round DOWN the price to the next whole number, eg. 859 yen will be 850yen etc. Nice!

    1) "yaki harasu": ginger and deliciously fatty salmon
    2) "onion salmon": salmon with raw onion and mayonnaise
    3) "maguro no yuke": pieces of raw tuna marinated in soy sauce and sesame seeds, topped with chopped green onions AND a raw quail egg, all wrapped in toasted seaweed!!)

(not pictured: "negi toro": similar to "maguro no yuke" except the tuna is pureed and there is no raw egg)

    Various: Kyoto Station
  • Tip Rating:

  • If you have problem finding food, go to the Kyoto Station as there are many eateries and restaurants there. Prices are very affordable and servings were big.

Udon and Cold Soba Set. The green tea offered was good too.

This place just rocks! If you're looking for fresh, quickly served sushi & cold Kirin beer this is the place to come. It's always crowded but there are two floors to accomdate patrons of this budget sushi restaurant. Here you won't have to worry about messing your Japanese language skills up while ordering sushi from a chef.....you just look at what looks good and pick a plate right off the conveyor belt. The plates are color coded which idicates the price of the sushi you choose (averages about 100 yen per plate). The beer is cold and the atmosphere is festive.

There is so much good stuff to choose from I'd hate to only list my favorites.

If you don't feel like spending big bucks in a more traditional style Sushi restaurant look for a restaurant which displays a mini conveyor belt with plastic sushi in the front window. These places are called Kaiten Zushi and are much cheaper than a formal sushi restaurant. After your seated just sit back and enjoy the view of the sushi chefs preparing plates to be placed on the automated conveyor belt which makes its round through the restaurant.

    Various Locations: Japanese Pickles
  • Tip Rating:

  • Pickles are eaten with sushi or sashimi. Japanese pickles are usually made of radish and they taste very nice even eaten plain. I was almost tempted to buy after trying the pickles at one of the shops. Now I regret not buying some back.

Izusen, Daitokuji: ZEN TRADITIONAL kYOTO CULTURE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Fragrance of the four seasons and hearty hospitality

One day on our tour through Kyoto we visited the Daitokuji Temple and suddenly we stand in this Zen Temple restaurant - and it was a great experience. We enjoyed a vegetarian meal in this refined Zen Temple.

A "Teppatsu" is a round bowl made of iron and used by priests to receive food. Priests in ancient times made it a rule to live a simple life of eating all their meals from on "Teppatsu". The vegetarian "Teppatsu" cooking of IZUSEN employs theses bowls, piling them one upon another six or seven high. In the confines of this quiet temple, your are able to enjoy a dinner whenever you please.
