    Hot pot

    This charming Kyoto restaurant has been in business for 300 years. What sets it aside from other restaurants in Kyoto is the great, authentic atmosphere. You enter through a small garden area into a low-lit, wood paneled building set with low tables and subdued colors. From the back seating area there is a view of a small garden. The menu is relatively simple, with noodle dishes and pot dish. The food we had was very good, and considering the classy atmosphere, well priced. While located in the center of Kyoto, coming here makes you feel a world apart.

    the street front

    This little noodle shop has a history that goes back 300Years! The Emperor himself used to eat here. Sample udon and soba noodles the way they should be! Delicious!! Nothing like the sparkling "traditional" restaurants of the tourist zones.

    Favorite Dish: Although the street front is all in Japanese, they have a lovely well-written menu in English! For tourists I would recommend the tempura-soba/ or udon, for 1280Yen. There are other one bowl noodle dishes for around 700Yen each average. They also have beer 400Yen for a small bottle and hot sake for 700Yen.

    Tsukimi soba and green tea

    Though the English menu really is very well done, they didn't show my favorite dish! It was only on the Japanese menu!! (on the otherhand the history of the shop was only written on the English menu...)

    Favorite Dish: Tsukimi soba. Fresh buckwheat noodles in a hot fish broth with a raw egg, crispy toasted seaweed slices and japanese horseradish!! LOVE this dish!! And served with fragrant green tea.... aaaah heaven on a cold winter's day! 750Yen.
