There are many flea markets in Kyoto every month but the one at Toji Temple is the largest. It is only held on the 21st of the month, every month, from 7am-5pm. You can find everything here: kimonos, pottery, toys, antiques, household goods, furniture, etc. The flea market at Chionji Temple on the 15th of every month is more of a handicrafts market. Most of the vendors sell their own wares, ranging from bags to jewelry to pottery to homemade banana bread muffins. Bargaining is ok at flea markets. There are all sorts of things a visitor can buy and take home. I came across these special mushrooms in one the covered walkways lined with various stores. I'm not quite sure what was so special about these mushrooms but they were selling for over a hundred dollars. If you're interested in something more useful and traditional try hunting down bargain Geisha statues for $10, baby kimonos for $5, or $40 Samurai swords. Leave a Comment Theme: Other |

Located at the corner of Sanjo and Karasuma Streets, Shinpuhkan was built in 1926 (Taisho 15). Shinpuhkan was designed by the Ministry of Posts and Communications architect Yoshida Tetsuro (1894-1956) to be used as the Central Telephone Company Building. The tile on the building's exterior are arranged in a subtly irregular design that is one of the building's distinguishing features. The bricks are laid in an unusual pattern, which might be considered an influence of North German Expressionist Movement. It was re-opened in 2001 as the Shinpuhkan shopping center. The three-storied building features clothing stores, restaurants, cafes etc., and the inner courtyard is used to hold events, as well as housing business facilities. Sells pottery, lacquerware, glassware, clocks, furniture.... from the Meiji to the Showa period. Reasonably priced, with little 50year old plates from 100Yen each, to delicate 30,000Yen antique Meiji era lacquerware bowls....
I bought this lacquerware plate from the Meiji era (ie. about 100years old) as well as some black early Showa period soup bowls. hmm I'd also like to get the light as a feather early Showa drinking glasses.... (ie. from about the 1930's, the ones grandma would have used...) - I just worry I would break them!!
I bought the bowls on sale! 500Yen each! They also have some lovely Taisho Period lacquerware trays that i think I want!! Only 4 of them left. 2500Yen each. Very reasonable...
