This is one of Kyoto's newest temples. Built in 1895 to cheer up the people of Kyoto after the capital was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo in 1868. On first site the huge tori gates over the main road aren't promising, but once inside that all changes. The large gravel courtyard contrasts with the green roof, the bright red painted wood and (on the day we visited) the clear blue sky.

Entrance to the temple area is free. The gardens cost 600Yen. Opens 8.30am and closes 5.30pm when we were there at the end of March.

Don't miss the Kyoto Handicraft Center round the back!

  • Address: Okazaki region of Eastern Kyoto
  • Directions: We walked here from the southern end of the Philosophers path and it should probably be combined with this due to its location.

Although Kyoto boasts a great number of cultural sites, it is not actually a great place for viewing gardens however, there are a few great gardens, and the Heian Shrine's Shin-en Garden is certainly one of Kyoto's best!

It circles around the back of the shrine and features a variety of cherry trees, ponds with stepping stones, a beautiful bridge, and more. The Heian Shrine is particularly gorgeous during the cherry blossom season. Many of the blossoms in Kyoto are white, but at the Heian Shrine, blossoms are a vibrant pink!

As for the shrine itself, it is modeled after the old Heian Imperial Palace, so it doesn't look other Japanese shrines. The torii gate is also quite massive!

Seeing the Heian Shrine is free, but the Shin-en Garden costs 600 yen.

It amazes me how different the Japanese do things to the rest of the world, check out the Heian Shrine in Kyoto and look at the architecture and bright colours it has built over 100 years ago in the late 1800`s.

This is a rather new shrine, built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the Heian Capital. The ritual hall was built in 1976. The torii before the shrine is one of the largest in Japan. But what there really is to see, is the garden and the hundreds of cherry trees. Incredibly beautiful!

Admission fee to the garden: 600 yen for adults

Built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto as the capital of Japan.

This on is not a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE.

Quite striking on a sunny day at 5:00 pm.

The site depicts the Imperial Palace in Kyoto in 795 AD.

Lots of bus tours stop here so its best to come at the end of the day or early morning.
