Along the River
The Kamo Gawa is an important spot. This river runs through the downtown of Kyoto City. This river is a major landmark and the one of the only places in Kyoto that has real green grass.
Kamo Gawa is a great place to walk, run, ride your bike or sit and share a coffee. In the summer you see plenty of drunk Japanese Teenage boys who want to jump in.
I enjoy the North of Kyoto City. I can climb into the mountains or sit by thr river. In the summer it is hot in the winter it is cold. You can always relax!
Nap, walk, practice your music, meditate... Whatever it is you do.
Downtown you can sit by the river any time of year and drink...
The river is full of bars with balconies open in the summer and coffee shops ypu sit at in the summer or winter.
Or you can go to the shop and drink whatever you like by the river....
In the winter, though, you might want to stay inside.

Kamogawa (Kamo = wild duck, Gawa = river) was the eastern limit of Heiankyō, and had a significant meaning according to fengshui. Since the route of the river is highly linear, some people believe it was artificial, though no record of massive construction exists.
The riverbanks are popular walks for residents and tourists. In summer, restaurants open balconies looking out to the river.
There are pathways on which one can walk along the river.
The encounter between Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Benkei at Gojō Bridge (not the present one, but presumably Matsubara Bridge) over the river is a famous legend set in the late Heian period. It's now immortalized with Izumo no Okuni's statue by the river side near Gojō Bridge.
Sitting at EXACTLY EQUAL...
Sitting at EXACTLY EQUAL distance (!!) - couples along the Kamo river...
Don't they make a pretty pattern?! This phenomena unique to the Kamo river (I believe), has been studied by sociologists... :P and still it remains a mystery.
