Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion): The famed golden temple.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The famed golden temple in the Kinkakuji temple complex is a sight to behold. I visited on a freezing March day in 2005. The sky was dark and it was sleeting by the time I got to see the temple. My fingers nearly froze off!
The temple is one of those few things that literally grabs your attention. Entry to the actual building is closed off, but the picturesque setting is the main attraction. There is actually very little else of major attraction in the temple complex. Take your time and linger at the Golden Pavillion, for, if you proceed too quickly past it, you'll be at the exit gate before you know it!!
The entry was JPY400 in 2005.

Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion): Contrast between gold and green
  • Tip Rating:
  • I like the contrast between the golden pavillion and the surrounding trees. The ground is covered with moss which looks like a green carpet.

    Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion): Stunning!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kinkaku-ji is one of the most famous temples in the area and probably one of the most photographed as well. There is quite a bit of history to it, so if you don't have a good guide book that gives the history, consider joining a tour or something.

It was originally built in the 1300s but was burnt down by a monk in the mid-1900s and obviously rebuild since then! It has been used by shoguns, monks, and various other groups.

The building is archetecturally interesting for the various styles combined into 1 building. The outside has something close to 50 kilos of gold covering it.

It's surrounded by a beautiful park (but what park ISN'T beautiful in Japan??) and has the potential to be very serene - when the all of us tourists aren't there!

THe entrance fee is about 400 yen. It's well worth it, even though you can't go inside the Golden Pavilion.

    Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion): Kinkaku-ji.
  • Tip Rating:
  • KINKAKU-JI - The Golden Pavilion: Built by 3rd Ashikaga shogun Yoshimitsu (1358-1408) who reliquished his duties & entered priesthood at the age of 37! The complex was converted to a temple with the Zen priest, Soseki, as the superior since Yoshimitsu was very much a follower of Soseki. The current structure is a replica since the original was destroyed by arson in 1950.
