This is probably the 2nd most famous temple in Kyoto. The original building was constructed in the late 1300's as a retirement filla for Shgun Asikaga Yoshimitsu while son converted it into a temple. It was burnt into ashes in 1950 so in 1955 a full reconstruction was completed that exactly followed the original design. Only difference is that the gold foil covering was extended to the lower floors. It's actually much smaller than you would imagine but overall speaking, it's still worth a visit. Souvenir shops inside the temple complex got some nice stuffs, too!

Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion): The Golden Pavilion or Temple
This pavilion was constructed in 1397 for Ashikaga yoshimitsu, but after his death in 1408 it became a Zen temple, housing relics of the Buddha.
Unfortunately the original was burned down by a fanatic monk in 1950, and this won was built in 1955. The temple building is covered in gold.

This temple is a UNESCO site and a must for the tourist in Kyoto. The highlight is obviously the temple itself as the gardens, although very nice, are not in the same league as Kodaiji Temple or others in the Eastern side of the ciry.
It gets busy here and tripods are not allowed, so be prepared.

    Entrance: Yen 500

  • What a spectacular sight when you get your first glimpse of it shimmering across the water. I over-dosed on temples and shrines in Kyoto but I will never forget this one.

Worth taking a look, not only for its famed golden pavilion but also for its extensive grounds. A good place to walk, hang out in nature etc. There is also a shrine, and some sourvenir shops there. But note you can get most of the sourvenirs cheaper elsewhere, except for the amulets. Apparently you can only get amulets from temple grounds, and each temple has its own amulets with the temple's name inscribed. At Kinkakuji, there are stalls selling sake with gold flecks inside. Taste salty to me though.

The entrance ticket looks like a big tailsman, and cost 400yen. Opens from 9.30-5pm.

this place is very peaceful and inspiring, like others in the area... I was there on a rainy summer day which was actually refreshing.
