This temple means "clear spring" & indeed it is. You can taste the spring water of this temple when you reach the far end of the grounds.
The temple & its grounds are grand. There are many areas in & around the temple. You can see pagodas, see if you can get some extra luck by reaching a rock walking straight with your eyes closed, & go underground & walk in the dark (you can`t even see your hands in front of you) where you reach a good luck fortune rock.
There are plenty of souvenir shops along the paths to the temple. Very tempting!! Sample the foods that they sell as well. It`s a treat!

Take another route to Kiyomizu temple. The usual route is full of tourists and full of souvenirshops......

This path is leading from the Otani Mausoleum up the mountain to the Kiyomizu dera. Most of it is through the graveyard, Toribeyama.

  • Directions: Just leave the Otani Mausoleum at the north gate or follow the road at the northside of the park.

    Kiyomizu Temple: KIYOMIZU TEMPLE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visit KIYOMIZU TEMPLE which is located at the splendid spot called Otowasan (Mount Otowa), one of the Kyoto's Higashiyama (east mountains), commanding the grand panoramic view of the whole Kyoto City, the western mountains far away and the southern part of the city as well.
This temple was founded by Yenchin, the great priest, in the 8th century and the present structures rebuilt in the 17th century consist of Niomon (two storied gate of the Deva Kings), Sanjunoto (three storied pagoda), Shoro (bell tower), Hondo (main sanctuary) and Otowa No Taki (waterfalls)

Kiyomizu-Dera means something like "clear water". The name comes from the waterfall which originates from an unknown source in nearby Mt. Otowa. The water passes through the temple area and it is a common belief to take and drink some of the water. This practice seems to be very popular with student classes visiting the temple.

    Kiyomizu Temple: Kiyomizu-Zaka street
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kiyomizu-Zaka is a colourful street in eastern Kyoto. It is the main and only street uphill bringing to the Kiyomizu-Dera Temple. There are many small shops with souvenirs etc., mainly for japanese tourists. It is a nice "old fashioned" street, that reminds me some other south east asian countries more than modern Japan.

The Kiyomizu-Dera is probably the oldest Temple complex in Kyoto. It dates back to the 8th century, though most of the buildings have been reconstructed three/four centuries ago. It is located in eastern Kyoto, in a green and hilly area. It is a pleasant and very popular place, though it can be too crowded sometimes. In 1994 the temple was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

    Kiyomizu Temple: Buddhist temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • This buddhist temple was founded in 780. Nowadays it belongs to the UNESCO "World Cultural Heritage". Kiyomizu means pure water. And, indeed, here you have a well with very special water. If you drink from that well you have better chances of getting a good spouse (if you're still single that is). People come here to pray for succesfull and happy marriage. Great panorama view over Kyoto from the famous wooden terrace.

It's an official candidate for the new 7 wonders of the world.

    Admission: 300 Yen
Open: Daily 6:00 to 18:00 (regular hours)

Kiyomizu Temple: kiyomizudera temple. great views
  • Tip Rating:
  • nestled in the hills and blanketed in sakura trees, this large temple (a few temples really..) is a must see. just ??300

Kiyomizu-dera is situated on approximately 130,000 square meters and consists of over 30 structures.
Whenever you visit this temple you won't be alone, except maybe early in the morning. All kinds of good luck charms can be bought, and also there are many shops selling japanese goods on the steep road to the temple. the charms sold can cure disease or help with luck in love and life.

Many of the buildings in Kyoto have been burnt down and rebuilt during a long violent history, but kiyomizudera remained intact. It never favored any of the warring parties, and consequently, there was never any reason for revenge. The temple burnt down once however, but was reconstructed a few years later in 1633 by the Shogun. So, even if the now standing buildings are only 350+ years old, the original design is from more than 1200 years ago, almost twenty years before the capital was moved to Kyoto.

i tihnk my pictures will speak more words about this pretty temple. i suggest you visit during the sakura festival.

Kiyomizu Temple: A great place to watch the sunset
  • Tip Rating:
  • I strongly recommend checking out this place! Regardless of your religious beliefs (or lack of beliefs), I think this is an amazingly peaceful and spiritual place if you open yourself up to it.

The temple is over 1000 years old. Many parts have obviously been rebuilt, fixed, updated, whatever -- but standing in a place that has been used for a millenium is awe-inpiring, and rare for people coming from the "New World" where old usually means it was built a couple hundred years ago.

Make sure you check out the sacred springs which are supposed to have healing powers. The name of the temple means "pure water."

Take some time to get a birds-eye-view of the city.

Also, make sure you wander over all the grounds - there are little temples tucked into out of the way spots.

  • Directions: Take bus 206 or 207 to the bottom of the hill, and keep walking UP. Takes about 10 minutes to walk if you don't stop to check out all the shops - which is worth doing, too.

Kiyomizu Temple: Walk from Kiyomizu-dera, take...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Walk from Kiyomizu-dera, take the street on the right (the Geisha dress up place is on the street to the left)and on the right are steps leading down. This street is called Sannen-Zaka and leads into Ninen-Zaka. This is the part of Kyoto that people mean when they say -'you must go' so don't miss it!
Old world Japan with narrow streets, tea houses with carp gardens and generally lots of people but still nice. From here there are many touristy things to see like gardens and temples.
