I think Kyomizu is the name of this temple. Theres so many temples to check out that it'd be almost impossible to remember all the names unless you're japanese. This place was pretty cool, the temple was neat but the scenery was even better. From the temple you can look out and get a beautiful view of Kyoto with kyoto tower in the distance.

Drink the water and stay for the view.
This temple is built on wooden pillars on the hill side. From the balcony built on the right hand side of the temple you get a great view of Kyoto. Follow the route around the back of the temple for the classic view with the temple on the right hand side. The route then takes you down to the water fall where you can queue up and drink some of the water from the water fall ("Kiyo" means pure, "mizu" means water) and it is supposed to have healing properties. It is a tricky feat that involves taking a cup on the end of a 1m long pole and filling it from the water fall. You then need to drink the water without bashing the person next to you! The cups are irradiated so you won't catch the cold off the previous person.
Entrance to the area is free, 300Yen for the main hall. Open every day from 6am to 6pm.
It seems to be a popular destination for the tour busses, we went late in the day and it wasn't too bad.

You must go to this place when you are in Kyoto. From the upper part you can see a wide view. In autumn the view will be the colourful autumn foliage, in winter it will be the white snow, in spring it will be the pretty pink sakura blossoms......

The temples here are amazing. It's a collection of temples on the side of the mountain. The road leading up to the temple is doted by all sorts of shops selling all sorts of foods, and things.
Once you get to the temple, you make a donation and then are free to walk around the grounds. The temples and scenery are amazing. Perched on the moutain you can see all of Kyoto .
It is relatively close to Kyoto station (you can take a bus which takes about 15 minutes to get there or walk which took us 2hrs since we stopped all over the place to check things out).
The nearby cemetary is also very cool (and massive). It's also on the side of the mountain.
Very cool place. Worth the visit.

The temple is another UNESCO site and draws the crowds accordingly - especially in autumn.
The grounds are worth the time to explore and the best views are from the gardens, looking back at the temple.
At night the temple is floodlit, which gives a different perspective of the site.

almost hanging on a hill, you must walk a steep hillside to see the most beloved temple in the nation.
founded in 798 and restored in 1633
there are numerous shops lining the way to the temple, called the teapot lane.

From this large stage you will be able to look down at the city and some other parts of KyoMizu. On the southern side of it, there's a hill covered with many cherry trees. It should be wonderful on late march ! On the back of the picture, you have the Oku-no-In, the "inner-temple" where people enter to pray or to check their luck by shaking a box untill they get a stick out of it. Notice the straw roof.

Buddha's footprint stone. Some buddhist temple have "artefacts" from buddha's life, a bit like the saint's relics of catholic church.
According to the "Kanbutsu Zanmai Sutra" it is said that even if one is burdened with uncountable-timeless sins, if he looks upon the footprints of the Buddha, its sins will be extinguishes.

The lady is shaking a box untill a stick get out of it. Than she show the stick to a person from the temple who give her a written message. As far as I understood, the pronostics are always for good fortune. ;-)
Notice the huge post, they know about large trees !

Kiyomizudera is the MUST SEE temple in Kyoto. Sitting on high stilts, the temple also offers a nice view of the Kyoto city from its big terrace.
Extracted from web-link:
Main temple of the Kitahosso sect of Buddhism. Founded in 778 and built starting 798 on the side of Otowa Hill. The temple includes some 30 structures most of which were rebuilt in 1633 by Tokugawa Iemitsu the 3rd shogun. The Main Hall (National Treasure) with its wooden balcony is a beautiful work of architecture in the Heian period style with a single-ridge roof sloping in four directions and cypress-bark roofing. It contains an image of the Eleven-headed Kannon (Important Cultural Property). Otowa Waterfall is visible below the balcony. Koyasu-no-To (Important Cultural Property) a 3-storied pagoda built as a petition for easy childbirth can be seen across the valley. In December 1994 Kiyomizudera Temple became part of the World Cultural Heritage.
