Kyoto Station/Tower: Kyoto Station Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you reach Kyoto, the very first thing you will see when landed in the city centre (Kyoto Station), you will see this tall Kyoto Tower dominating the skyline. Every city has something like this and this Kyoto Tower (more if you step into the Kyoto Station Building) will leave you an impression that Kyoto could be another concrete jungle and you start to wonder where are all the temples and shrines. I did not go up to the Kyoto Tower due to time constraint.. I took this picture when I was waiting for my bus at Berth A2. If you have the time, go up there during a clear day and I believe you would be able to see nice scenery of Kyoto. Extracted from web-link : This 131 meter-high observatory tower was constructed in 1964 on top of a building directly opposite JR Kyoto Sta. building. Its unique form is in the shape of a Japanese candle stick. Instead of a conventional steel frame it is made of a tower of steel rings. The observation deck is located 100 meters above from the ground and is a major sightseeing spot with a wonderful view of the whole city of Kyoto nearby temples and shrines and the 36 peaks of the Higashiyama range. A sauna is located in the 3rd underground level of the tower building (open 7:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.). Opened: December 28 1964

Kyoto Station/Tower: Kyoto station -Like visiting the set for Star Wars
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tons and tons of steel. Platforms reaching out in thin air. Escalators taking you up up up... to the look-out level from where you can see Kyoto and beyond... Thats Kyoto station in a nut-shell and it's well worth a visit even when you haven't got a train to catch. Upstairs is a hotel and in its lounge beautiful Ikebana (flower arrengements) can be seen and on this level there's a delightful café too. Under ground is a big shopping mall and outside the building (by main entrance) there's a good bakery. I do like the futuristic look of Kyoto station and the platforms sticking out in thin air does remind me of a scene in Star Wars when Luke is fighting Darth Vader in City of the Clouds.. The architect was Hiroshi Hara, also known for the Umeda Sky Building in Osaka and Yamato International in Tokyo.

  • Directions: Kyoto Station is the city's main station served by all trains of Japan Railways, including shinkansen, Kintetsu Railways and the subway. A large bus terminal is located in front of the station building.

    Kyoto Station/Tower: Kyoto Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • A distinctive Kyoto landmark built in 1964 and situated directly in front of Kyoto station. It's 131-meter-high and resembling a torch. Illuminated at night it serves as a truly handy location device. Inside are an observation platform, souvenir shop, hotel and a large bathhouse, plus an assortment of weird and wonderful amusements and arcade games. The entry fee is JPY770.

In Kyoto station you can walk the skywalk across the special station building at the eleventh floor. The skywalk is open from 10:00- 22:00. You can walk it for free. And see the traveller as little dots below, or enjoy the view over Kyoto.

    Kyoto Station/Tower: Kyoto Station
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kyoto Station is HUGE. It's definitely worth hitting this spot just to see the architecture. You can go all the way to the roof of the station and get a good view of Kyoto -- no need to pay to go to the top of Kyoto Tower! There's also a catwalk at the top you can take to the other side of the station. You can get a good view of Kyoto and the Tower there as well. The department store, Isetan, is located right at the station with food court on one of the top floors. In addition, there's plenty more shopping below the station in The Cube. There was, however, a lot of debate about the construction of the station since it was so large and modern, and did not fit well with the ancient city. The station basically defines much of the southern border of Kyoto city.

    Kyoto Station/Tower: A huge building
  • Tip Rating:
  • The new Kyoto Station building was built on the occasion of the 1,200th anniversary of the Heian Capital foundation. It was opened to the public in 1997 and stands in perfect contrast with many foreign tourists' image of Kyoto as the capital of traditional Japan. A department store, hotel, theater, game center, shopping mall, government offices, various restaurants and an observation deck can be found on the facility's 15+ floors.

Kyoto Station/Tower: Pass through Kyoto station-...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pass through Kyoto station- contrary to what some people say this is a fantastic piece of architecture with escalators which go up into the sky and a view that means there is no need to spend money and go up kyoto tower! Everything about it! It looks good from inside and out and on a nice day its so much nicer tha your average dingy station.

The base of the tower is situated on top of the Tokyo tower hotel. There is a two story observation deck at the top of the tower with a full panoramic view of Kyoto with almost every famous site in the city. Built in the same year of the Tohyo Olimpic games, the tower was created to attract tourist from Tokyo to Kyoto...confused?

    Kyoto Station/Tower: A "not-so-tall" tower...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you have some extra cash and/or time, you may want to get up to the tower to have an overview of Kyoto on your first day there. But, you will be fine too if you give it a miss. The third picture gives you an idea of the Kyoto Station atrium... it is the most peaceful part of the Kyoto Station. Always allocate enough time to look at signages and go to the right platform to catch your train... you will be bombarded with the number of direction signages and people walking in all directions. The fourth and fifth pictures showed you the bus ticket center that is right outside the Kyoto Station. We bought our 1 day pass there.
